To give a little context to his statement, here is his original “detail” statement from 1987:

“I ask myself several questions. I’m not saying the gas chambers didn’t exist. I haven’t seen them myself. I haven’t particularly studied the question. But I believe it’s just a detail in the history of World War II.”

In that context, it’s clear that he was bordering on Holocaust denial. He is saying, essentially, that he’s not sure whether the Holocaust happened, but hasn’t paid much attention to the “question” because it’s “just a detail” (e.g., not a big deal).

Pretty bad stuff.

He’s saying — again — that the Holocaust was no big deal. If he didn’t feel this way, he wouldn’t bring it up over and over.

If he were not a Judeophobe, he’d say, the Holocaust was evil — it was — and part of the agenda of the Nazis, who invaded and occupied our homeland.

As someone noted above, does siding with the WWII-era Germans regarding the Holocaust make him a good nationalist Frenchman?

It’s part of the company he keeps, that European Jewry had it coming to them, and that they were even the cause of the war, so what do you expect should have happened to them?

Yes, a good Vichy nationalist Frenchman.

he brought it up? or was he asked by a reporter?

All I said was that the quote, all by itself (forgetting his history) doesn’t sound like it.

Usually when he uses this approach he notes that of a 1,000 page history of WWII, the camps would occupy 2 pages and the gas chambers 10 or 15 lines. Sometimes 2,000 pages, 5 pages, 20 lines. It's an old line of his. Other times noting that the gas chambers might have existed, he just never saw them himself. Too bad he can't stop venting for the benefit of his daughter.

55 million people died in WWII.

Yeah the Holocaust "only" accounted for 6 million.

So he's technically correct, but make no mistake, he meant that the "detail" of the Holocaust isn't that important to him.

It's pretty obvious that he is either an anti-Semite, or not quite a Holocaust denier, but at least a Holocaust minimizer.

Either way, a stupid statement for anyone to make out of the blue.

There are a lot of ANTISEMITES in the National Front in France, despite the daughter trying to hush up her father!

Apparently there are quite a few Jews, also.

Why is this news? It seems to me to be a hit piece written with just enough ambiguity so as to lead the casual reader to mistake the Anti-Semite father for the daughter who has aggressively courted France's Jews.

Well, the dude is stupid because he talks about the Germans.

Fact is, there was big powers like China, Japan, Russia etc... and there were in those places other genocides.

The problem of holocaust denial is that some people minimize what happened to jews instead of pointing to the second great holocaust denial issue: ie. the pipe dream disarmament orchestrated by the League of Nations.

Jews were disarmed, smug irresponsible members of the league disarmed thinking the collective whole would take care and had nothing to fear against a German thug.

Sadly NATO is also sleeping on similar paper tiger agreements, and, to wit, Obama backtracking on Iran, Cuba etc...

I find it stupid and disingenuous of the French far Right to keep trying to ignore certain atrocities instead of expanding and elaborating on them.

Truly, some Jews on the left are in holocaust denial, but not about antisemitism, but general holocaust denial regarding disarmament. No indeed, it was a free and gun violence free zone in the ghetto... until hitler decided to have his meal.

The French Far right is essentialy gelded and manipulated by communists.

Yes, we got rid of Hitler, but we kept Statism and Stalinism, both which were as important, if not more important, a role in the holocaust.

What a cynical joke! We fought antisemitism but kept the disarmament mantra makers unprosecuted!

:’) Oh, yeah, it was entrapment.

“Has your opinion about the Holocaust changed?”

“No! That was just a detail.”

He thinks he’s helping.

Considering the low-life who support his party, one could argue that he is helping.

But since his daughter has been trying to broaden the appeal long enough to win a lot of seats, he isn’t.

The recent election didn’t go nearly as well has she and her party had counted on, underperforming the most recent polls.

Oh, and she was busted for having taken a loan from the Russia police state as quid pro quo for her unflagging support for Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine and annexation of the Crimea.

Le Pen, between the local and the national
http://www.i24news.tv/en/opinion/66051-150330-analysis-le-pen-between-the-local-and-the-national

[snip] This past Sunday, the second round of local elections was held in France for control of the 2,054 districts comprising the country’s 101 departments (counties)... The center-right UMP of former President Nicolas Sarkozy, allied with the centrist UDI, won control of 67 departments. The Socialists... lost 28 departments, including certain traditional bastions in the Nord department... and an especially stinging rout in la Correze, the electoral district of President Francois Hollande... the Marine Blue Gathering, the extreme right-wing coalition of Marine Le Pen. Although not winning control of any departments, it did manage to get many of its candidates elected, reaffirming both its national and local anchors. [/snip]

Le Pen furious over dad’s ‘gas chamber’ comments
http://www.thelocal.fr/20150402/le-pen-in-row-over-gas-chamber-comments

[snip] “He thinks that the controversy is positive for the movement. Obviously, I profoundly disagree with that. I have said it again and again and again,” she said. “His words are just his own. He purposefully provokes and looks for controversy,” said Le Pen, who suggested she had “given up” trying to bring her father into line. [/snip]

Le Pen is a a Vichy apologist and fascist. He wishes to mitigate their crimes in order to cleanse the sins of the collaborators and traitors.

Most of the Jews who were in France who wound up perishing were the refugees who either came from Eastern Europe or fled the Nazis. The French felt these “refugee” and “foreign” Jews were a burden, and were more than happy to let the Nazis take them off their hands.

However, they did consider French-born Jews to be Frenchmen and were not as willing to hand them over, and as a result, 75% of French Jews did survive the war, one of the highest rates of all of the occupied countries. Not to diminish the horrible crimes that Vichy committed, but it does show that the French were not all bad during the war.
