Analysts cast doubt on Russian plans for supercarrier
Jane's Defence Weekly ^ | March 31, 2015 | By Reuben F Johnson

Russian Navy commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov's claim that Russia will build a new, super-sized aircraft carrier exceeding 85,000 tonnes has been met with scepticism by analysts.

Many have questioned how realistic this ambition might be, given the current limitations of Russia's shipbuilding industry in particular and defence industry in general.

The proposed supercarrier, announced by Adm Chirkov on 23 March, would be a quantum leap in capability and size over the Russian Navy's single existing carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov , which at 43,000 tonnes is less than half the displacement of the US Navy's Nimitz-class carriers.

The new ship, which would be designed to carry 100 aircraft, would be larger still than the 85,000-tonne class of carriers that was due to follow Kuznetsov and its sister ship, Varyag : a design that never got past the initial stages of construction due to the fall of the Soviet Union. . .

I second your Hmmmmmm. Also, I wonder what capacity Crimea has to be developed like that? Given Putin’s behavior with going shirtless, engaging in body building, etc. it seems he is really obsessed with conveying he has a big one. Could it be that the week long disappearance, and subsequent appearance with facial puffiness is a sign he has some illness? I hope he tries to build it and fullfil Reagan’s dream of their bringing about his own destruction with ruinous competition.

Yes.
I presumed you would Google it. I prefer not to talk about the capabilities of systems I’m privi to.
RAM and LaWS are replacing the Phalanx.
Firing 20mm rds at missiles travelling faster than they are is a losing physics equation.
CVNs exist to project power, there is no other asset that comes close in that regard. Vulnerable? What isn’t, but combined arms used properly mitigates vulnerability. As I said before, the MBT and the surface warship were both declared indefensible death traps decades ago, yet we continue to use both to great effect. As demonstrated in conflict, this is not because MBTs and ships are themselves that hard to destroy, but because combined arms tactics employed properly are very effective.

In a sense Putin already has pushed Russia over a cliff — he and his cronies have taken control of the country’s hydrocarbon business and overseas arms sales, and between US fracking, the Obama Recession leading to a longterm decline in US oil demand, and the Saudis maintaining most of their production levels, the profits from the Russian oil biz have been cratering

Obama’s response has been to side with Russia and Iran — both of which are dedicated to our destruction, whoops, I mean, all three of whom are dedicated to our destruction — simultaneously contributing to a swift march to general worldwide war, an Iran with nuclear weapons, a big push by the NeoSoviet Evil Empire to sell even more weapons to cover losses, and the breaking of US fracking and other oil production.

Earlier in the new USSR, plans for human missions to the Moon and Mars were announced... ;')

Your claim was particle beam weapons were being fielded now. Last I heard, the navy is having issues getting the electromagnetic catapults to work right, and the rail gun is a long way from being a useful ship weapon.

Laboratory experimental stuff and hardware being bolted onto ships are very different.

Very familiar with RAM and most all ship defensive weapons, spent years building target drones to go against them and later airborne threat simulation.

"LaWS"

When that laser successfully knocks down an incoming supersonic target like the Coyote or a Vandal, maybe it will be a viable anti-missile defense. It sure is not now. And is certainly is not a "particle beam weapon".

RAM is apparently effective, but suffers the usual limited magazine capacity of such systems. A huge issue in a 360° swarming attack that the Russian tactics employ and the Iranians will likely try and copy. Nice thing about it (if it still has it) is the IR seeker capability, perfect for the very hot signature of a Mach 2+ low altitude missile down the throat.

Well, as I said I’ve said what I can say. I should probably have just been quiet. All I can say on is wait.
I fully stand by the tactical points I made.
