Russian Navy commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov's claim that Russia will build a new, super-sized aircraft carrier exceeding 85,000 tonnes has been met with scepticism by analysts.
Many have questioned how realistic this ambition might be, given the current limitations of Russia's shipbuilding industry in particular and defence industry in general.
The proposed supercarrier, announced by Adm Chirkov on 23 March, would be a quantum leap in capability and size over the Russian Navy's single existing carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov , which at 43,000 tonnes is less than half the displacement of the US Navy's Nimitz-class carriers.
The new ship, which would be designed to carry 100 aircraft, would be larger still than the 85,000-tonne class of carriers that was due to follow Kuznetsov and its sister ship, Varyag : a design that never got past the initial stages of construction due to the fall of the Soviet Union. . .

Hey puttie,
Ya gots nothing ya punk.
Pretty bad when Americas fag in chief shows ya up ya punk.
If Putin would just cool his jets and deal with the West, he could probably negotiate some very interesting deals right now.
Instead the idiot is taking a pass on perhaps a once in a life-time opportunity to out-negotiate the likes of Obama.
If this guy is such a sage, why does he fail to realize this?
A 3,000 mile per hour ship killer missile costs about $11 million dollars. For the cost of one carrier an opponent can field hundreds of missiles. Warfare has become more about area denial than ship armament and capabilities. Just the threat of mines, for example, will stop navies from deploying expensive assets. True, carriers are beautiful and have awesome capabilities. But more and more money must be spent defending them until it becomes obvious the same amount could be spent more efficiently on a different mode of attack. The super carrier is obsolete. I hope we realize this before we lose 5,000, 10,000 or 15,000 men. The answer is a larger number of smaller vessels and greater use of unmanned vehicles.
Hmmmmmm...
Good point.
To ALL democrats and more than a few republicans.....
Whatever the Russians DO is SUPER...
Putin is just a rather lucky former KGB guy. He ain’t Einstein.
The answer is a larger number of smaller vessels and greater use of unmanned vehicles.
The threat of possible serious Attack can be more important THAN actual Attack..
IF the prophylactic bursts.. well then, you have another whole different problem..
WAR.....
Particle beam weapons now being fielded make even Mach-3 anti-ship cruise missiles irrelevant, ditto for SRBMs.
ASCMs aren’t to be laughed at, but they have been cited as bringing on the quick demise of the CV for 60 years now.
Fast SSNs are always an issue as well, and no defense is perfect, but 60+ srike aircraft basing from anywhere that there is deep water is a serious offensive capability. Far more than launching missiles from an SSGN.
Yes a CVN strike group will have to roll back the threat, but that is what they do. Meanwhile, they control the blue water guarding from all comers, who are far less capable.
Agreed.
Iranian bosses probably learned from Russian bosses to exaggerate about their weapons.
Since they like naming capital ships after admirals, should call it the Admiral Rozhestvensky.
That was the genius of Russian military thinking for many decades. I have to wonder WTH they are thinking now by getting into the major target arena.
Name or link just one particle beam weapon “now being fielded” and it’s capabilities.
“I have to wonder WTH they are thinking now by getting into the major target arena. “
Capital ships are the national equivalent of a large penis. Everybody wants the largest one on the block. (I mean that as an expression of status and the assumed respect that goes with that status.)
Maybe this is just a marketing ploy to imply that they have the design skills. That way they can still sell big ships to whoever is in the market for $2-$3 billion carriers.
LaWS
Is that supposed to mean something?
