MARION, Ind. -- A knot-making exercise at the Marion Fire Department is at the center of controversy between an assistant fire chief and a firefighter.
Asst. Chief Rick Backs, who is white, crafted a noose during the February exercise and allegedly threw it toward firefighter Mikel Neal, who was the only black firefighter participating, according to Neal's spokesperson. After allegedly throwing the noose, Backs walked out of the room, the spokesperson said.

The Ashley Book of Knots shows how to tie more than one hangman’s knot IIRC. The standard used to be soft laid hemp with 13 wraps, but whatever works.
