The Maricopa County attorney is coming under fire for calling a veteran an "enemy" during a debate-- and he's not backing down from his words.
This all unfolded at a debate over legalizing marijuana last week hosted by the Tempe Republican Women.
Bill Montgomery told a veteran he had no respect for him after the vet asked for a meeting to discuss how medical marijuana has improved his life.
"With all due respect sir, your name calling, 'potheads' offends me, said Don Ream during a Q & A portion of the debate.
Ream is a Vietnam veteran. He's been a medical marijuana patient for several years, and he told Montgomery he'd like to "educate him" on recreational use.
Montgomery argued against legalizing the drug in Arizona. Its an issue that could come up on the November ballot in 2016.
When Ream admitted to smoking recreationally, Montgomery responded:
"I have no respect for you, for someone that tried to claim you served this country and took an oath to uphold the constitution and defend against all enemies foreign and domestic because you're an enemy, he said.
The crowd booed back to him.
After the debate, Montgomery released this statement:
"Is [ream] an enemy like ISIS or Al Qaeda? Of course not. But if he or any other vet is going to use their status as a veteran to encourage people to break the law, then that does make them an enemy of our constitution and our laws and that is a sad commentary on where we are at."
Montgomery is a veteran himself. He's a West Point graduate who served in the Gulf War.
ABC15 wasnt able to get a hold of Don Reams for a comment.
What is put into marijuana to make it “medical”? Menthol?
This article may be doing a bit of “hero” elevation, but, veteran or not, calling someone the “enemy” because they use marijuana is more than a bit over the top.
No one that's never seen it work won't understand one bit, but the fact is, it does, no matter the BS propaganda out there, treat a number of illnesses. I've personally witnessed the effectiveness in someone with multiple issues, including PTSD and for treatment of other mental disorders. It's a shame so many continue to push the propaganda of "Reefer Madness". Ignorance is truly the most expensive commodity.
What is "it"?
The Constitution grants the federal government no authority over the intrastate growing, selling, buying, or using of marijuana.
Nothing is “put into marijuana” to make it medicinal - it is itself medicinal, and quite effective for a number of illnesses/conditions.
“The Constitution grants the federal government no authority over the intrastate growing, selling, buying, or using of marijuana.”
That was my first thought when I saw the fool on local news last night.
The US Government has all the authority it needs under the Constitution to defend it's populace against dangerous chemical threats, of which Marijuana constitutes one of the lesser ones.
This constant Libertarian assertion that government has no authority to stop dangerous threats to the populaces is just false, but like the Goebbels propaganda effort underpinning it, constant repetition of this false claim is necessary to convince less educated people to embrace this stupid idea.
And that is your goal; To convince the nation to do something stupid by constantly repeating false claims.
Emanate that penumbra, Al Gore.
Not advocating it, but marijuana DOES contain compounds found to have health benefits (look it up).
The irony is that in States that have legalized it and via defective organization has resulted in marijuana with fewer of the compounds that benefit.
One principal benefit is an anti-inflammatory response from application of marijuana oil (applied topically without ‘the high’). I’m not a ‘user’ but know people that do utilize it and enjoy benefits to their health (vs. pharma pills & addiction).
Just fyi. It’s not just about the hippies and entitlement-loafers, but they have certainly perverted it with their campaigns for ‘legalization’ (an oxymoron in the face of continued Federal designations for it).
To define and punish Piracies and Felonies committed on the high Seas, and Offences against the Law of Nations;
To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;
To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years;
To provide and maintain a Navy;
To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces;
To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;
To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;
So is Valium if you regard treating the symptoms of a problem with narcotics as "Medicine."
But we all know this "Medicinal" argument is just bullsh*t. It's just an effort to get a foot in the door, before forcing it open to the much greater demand for recreational usage. This is incrementalism in progress.
The active chemical in cannibas is THC, Tetrahydrocannabinol. THC has mild to moderate analgesic effects, and cannabis can be used to treat pain by altering transmitter release on dorsal root ganglion of the spinal cord and in the periaqueductal gray. Other effects include relaxation, alteration of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses, fatigue, and appetite stimulation. THC has marked antiemetic properties. It may acutely reduce aggression and increase aggression during withdrawal.
Smoking Mary Jane is not necessary to enable its medical qualities, THC can be extracted and prescribed. So the canard of smoking it is quite false. It may be simpler and less expensive, but not required.
Yes, it's just as false as the ignorant notion that pot is a "dangerous threat". Anyone who thinks so is an utter moron and has no clue what they are talking about.
Stop Lying Joseph Goebbels.
I am not interested in hearing your opinion on the Constitution. You are Mr. Dope pusher, and you have no interest in the truth.
In other words “Silence peasant!”
Unless you are a particularly impressive fellow, I dare say i've been derided by far better people than you, who ended up eating their words.
The dangers from Marijuana are numerous and varied. The primary danger is that it induces individuals to get in the recreational drug habit. Many of them go on to worse drugs and end up wrecking their lives and the lives of many around them, not to mention the fact that the rest of us end up paying for these welfare bums.
The stuff causes permanent brain damage in developing brains. The stuff has been linked to numerous psychotic breaks. (Columbine, Aurora, Gabby Giffords, etc.) The stuff has become "Soma" for the masses.
You do not see the drug as dangerous because you have a far too limited scope of the problem.
