PALMETTO -- Gripping a squirt bottle of hand sanitizer in her gloved hands, school food bus driver Debra Valdez called to four children shyly making their way toward the brightly colored school bus with mom pushing the youngest one forward.
"Y'all ready to eat?" Valdez asked with a smile.
The four children were the first of more than 70 students who ate a free lunch Tuesday courtesy of the Manatee County School District Food and Nutrition Services Department.
The district retrofitted a school bus last summer to feed students and brought the program back for spring break this week.
The bus fed 120 students in three locations Monday, and about 150 students Tuesday. Up to 300 students can be fed each day during the break and more can be accommodated if necessary.
Sitting around a table under the sun, siblings Ashley Plaza, 8; Luis Martinez, 7; Octavio Martinez, 5; and Milly Martinez, 3 munched on ketchup and mustard-slathered chicken patty sandwiches, fresh broccoli with ranch dip, baked Cheetos, chocolate milk and apple slices. Older brother, 10-year-old Jesus Plaza, sat nearby with Nelsa Crespo, their mom.
Crespo said she heard about the program this week from a notice sent home with her youngest daughter, Milly, who is enrolled in a Head Start Program.
"Lunch is important," Crespo said.

So these families aren’t already receiving Food Stamps, WIC, government cheese, allotments from food banks, TANF and more? Where does this end? We cannot afford to spend trillions of dollars on handouts.
If lunch is important lady, get off your sorry butt and make it for your own kids. It’s not hard, loaf of bread, jar of peanut butter and some basic motor skills.
But Nooooo, depending on the taxpayers and productive citizens is so much easier.
Leech.
Those are not northern Mexican children, they're from deep southern Mexico.
Just a personal observation. And how much for the Hippie Bus conversion, 500k, 1-mil?
I guess the parents work in the manatee fields or sumthin’.
I know I know. They do the jobs no one else will do.
Go Citrus!!
“Lunch is important,””
Now they tell me. I never eat lunch. I eat breakfast late - when I’m hungry and then nothing until dinner....
I just finished telling a friend in an email that the only way we are going to survive the foolishness of today is to go back to school and learn the “modern” way.....we’re just a bunch of dinosaurs and incapable of UNDERSTANDING the ways of today.
That and keep her knees together so she won’t have a dozen more kids we have to support for her. Bet she eats off all the kids’ plates. The little one is just 3 yo which means she’s enrolled in some sort of preschool because mama is too busy with the latest baby daddy.

And don’t forget the jelly!!!
TANSTAAFL
“Moochie Meals on Wheels” are stalking the poor kids on break.
What did the mommy bought with the EBT... drugs? I guess it wasn’t food for little Trayvon.
Or the Marshmallow Fluff... or bananas....
This school district has too much money.
You gotta have pretty low expectations for Moochie Meals" from Manatee.
Oh the Hugh manatee!
