Shattuck: Bowe was wrong kid to bring home
The Boston Herald ^ | 03/27/15 | Tom Shattuck

Last July, President Obama presented Staff Sgt. Ryan Pitts of New Hampshire with the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony. Pitts single-handedly defended an outpost from hundreds of attacking Taliban fighters.

He emptied machine guns, tossed grenades and did whatever it took to protect his fellow soldiers.

As Obama put it, “Against the onslaught, one American held the line.”

Less than two months earlier, Obama had been in the White House Rose Garden, grinning while the father of Army deserter Bowe Bergdahl gave his son an encouraging shoutout in Pashto — the language of the Taliban.

A Rose Garden ceremony. For the very definition of a soldier who did not “hold the line.”

Sickening.

Bergdahl had flipped the bird to his fellow soldiers and his country, emailing daddy that “America is disgusting.”

Professor Obama has let it be known that we do not pay ransoms. He will hold the line on that.

Apparently, exceptions can be made for the teacher’s pet.

Obama identifies with Bergdahl because he would have done the same thing, betray his unit, betray his country, and spit on America. In fact, he does it day in and day out now.

If you look over the whole deal...the gov’t of Qatar was the middleman on the deal. They paid the ransom....knowing they’d get military credits via the Pentagon later. Officially, the White House can say they paid nothing for this situation...but somewhere down the road...they gave Qatar a pay-back. And you should note....the group holding Bowe...had no interest in the five Gitmo folks and simply wanted the cash.

It’s said in the news he complained of harsh treatment while confined.

Well... is that supposed to be a mitigating factor?

Hardly.

He voluntarily walked off his watch and everything AFTER that is a moot point.

I don't feel a bit sorry for him. Just like I don't feel sorry for these stupid western teenage girls that want to go marry those animals. MORONS every one. Bowe should get the Slovik treatment and fast.

Correct. He deserted. That it didn’t work out like he wanted it to is irrelevant.

Yup!

He should be given a dishonorable discharge, denied his benefits and convicted as a traitor.

Time in slam goes without saying.

His is a textbook case of desertion and if there is no punishment for this, it’s a dangerous precedent.

He may be more than a deserter. He may be a defector, but he was not charged as such.

Pacifists rule...... no more war, no more warriors

Desertion is good as draft dodging.

This madness must end with the end of the madmen

I think there’s no doubt he gets the dishonorable discharge or bad conduct discharge (as we used to say, the ‘dead duck’ or the ‘big chicken dinner’), be busted down to private and forfeiture of all his pay and backpay from when he left. I think the question will be how much slammer time does he get. If they can link these soldiers dying directly to him leaving his post (by that I mean in a court of law) then he will probably get life.

I agree, and I hope his time in jail is perfectly horrible!

One good thing about this Bergdahl thing and that is Hillary defended it and that should be a big talking point if she is nominated

The modern military hierarchy may be reticent to proceed down this path when punishment is meted out, but both charges are punishable by death. At a minimum, this is what he should face. He deserted his post and cost the lives of fellow soldiers that were tasked with finding and returning him. After his desertion, his cooperation with the enemy is also sufficient reason for a firing squad, or hanging, his choice.

The swap wasn’t about Bergdahl, but Obama’s obsession with emptying GITMO. Obama could not simply open the gates and let the Taliban prisoners go free, but needed some pretext for their release to avoid a firestorm of criticism. Bergdahl was that pretext and Obama counted on a photo op homecoming to mute any criticism. However, the military hating Obama administration neither checked nor more likely cared that Bergdahl was a deserter. They hoped to twist the military into forgetting about Bergdahl’s treasonable acts so that Obama would look like a hero. What they failed to understand is that there is still honor in the military and despite the political pressure honor prevailed. I believe the Bergdahl affair is why Chuck Hegel resigned as Sec. of Defense ...he couldn’t stand to see this deserter made into a hero solely to fit Obama’s agenda.

It was also about slipping the Moslem terrorists an enormous sum of money, five billion dollars according to some sources.
