He took it off autopilot and switched it to descent. But I’m assuming he must have had to plug in coordinates or a destination, or perhaps there’s some way of faking out the system so that the system is prepared for a controlled descent - and he simply didn’t control it but let it crash.
He just started turning the wheel, and turning and turning. The descent alerted scrambled Mirage.
