... Young was supposed to be consuming the newly designed space food that NASA had sent up with them. To be fair, this proto-astronaut-grub was probably about as gross as a two-day-old sandwich.
Here I was, sitting over there flying and John was fooling around with the food, and all of a sudden he asked me if I wanted a corned beef sandwich, Grissom said in an April 1965 interview with the Miami News.
I hadnt counted on the pungent odor of corned beef in a closed cabin, Young admitted in the same article. Grissom, who died several years later in the tragic Apollo 1 fire, seems to have been a good sport about the stink.
But Young wrote in his memoirs that some members of Congress were mad at the astronauts for ignoring this expensive space food that represented tons of research and development by NASA....

In zero gravity, floating crumbs are a big hazard to delicate electrical equipment. That's why astronauts on the International Space Station snack on tortillas instead of regular bread.Still the most expensive food in history though.
For a while during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, that space food developed by NASA was marketed on earth. If I remember correctly, the food items were called Space Sticks. They didn’t taste very good—semi-sweet, sort of like a diet candy bar—but one that was the size of a fish stick was the equivalent of an entire meal.
Following the escapades of the diaper baby and that whacko Mark Kelly, I’ve somewhat lost respect for the astronaut corps as a whole.
I remember they were selling freeze dried ice cream at the NASA store.
Did you ever notice there’s never been a Mexican astronaut and wonder why?
Freeze dried ice cream was a success... great taste.
Tang. . .and those dehydrated “ice-cream” sandwiches.
Yes, they were. Luved those things.
Space Food Sticks. I was into the whole space thing. Like most kids were.
