Sure, every pilot is going to try to control a rapidly descending aircraft if for no better reason than self preservation.
But not all attempts at control succeed. And unless the pilots attempts to regain control of the aircraft succeed, then the aircraft or its descent cannot be described as controlled. Regardless of what nonsense issues from the mouth of Shep Smith.
