Four years ago, my reporting on Obamacare brought me to the city of Terre Haute, Ind. Located near the Illinois border, about an hours drive from Indianapolis, the city of 60,000 residents reminded me of the area where I grew up near Utica, N.Y.
It was a brisk March morning, nearly a year after President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, and I had trekked to the Midwest with a camera crew to meet Scott Womack, owner of about a dozen IHOP restaurants in Indiana and Ohio.
Womacks testimony before Congress earlier in 2011 caught my attention and I wanted to visit him at one of his restaurants to see firsthand how Washingtons policymaking had impacted his work.
The IHOP in Terre Haute is located on South 3rd Street, just a few minutes from the Interstate 70 interchange and a short drive from the Holiday Inn where we had stayed the night before. As we sat in the back of the bustling restaurant waiting for Womack to arrive, we ordered french toast, omelettes and other IHOP specialities.
At the time, Womack employed about 1,000 people at his 12 restaurants. When the Affordable Care Act became law on March 23, 2010, he had big plans for his franchise. He had purchased a development agreement in 2006 that would expand the company to 14 new IHOP locations in Ohio.

Obamacare changed all of that.
And, of course, he didn't suffer as much as the little guy did.
Thanks and FUBO.
Wow! You beat me by less than a minute...
Sowwy :-)
FORWARD!
How dare he complain?
His money is going to Hamas and Boko Harem and al Qaeda
(the “rebels”), and for the brothels of the White Mosque.
And his organs are for the EXEMPT
( = SCOTUS, Congress and their Staff, and Moslems).
Obviously Womack is a racist!/sarc.
And a homophobe. How he hates the President!
this has got to end ,ugly or I wakeup.
Our sorry Congress with their promises to overturn it, then wimp out. Every single ONE of them who said that they would vote to repeal need to be turned out of they have not made any attempt to do so. There are a few who have tried, but some of the ones who said they supported repeal have been liars....much like the democrats.
So thick you can cut it with a knife!
This country has only two problems. The first is the Democrat Party who wants to steal from the productive and give to the unproductive to buy votes and the second is a sycophantic media who not only allows but encourages them to do it.
Um, you have accurately named two major problems, but there is a third, higher evil which directs the behaviors of these anti-American bastards, the globalist gaggle of elite bankers. It is they who are the masters of the two you named, and the two you named do what they are told by their masters of the purse.
Well, he didn’t build that!
The main problem is that the two you mentioned are one and the same entity.
Bump
We all know that Obamacare is a bad idea and is counter to limited government. We know the federal government should not be involved in 95% of what it does. That is another topic altogether.
But this article has a problem.
This fellow was able to sell his low margin business to someone else. That someone else sees a profit potential somehow or is buying for land or leases. So something does not add up and the reporter should have looked into that and described some words from that angle.
Now if these IHOPs were sold for land and leases, then that means they are going out of business. Some other business is taking their place and that should be looked at.
If they were sold for continued operation as IHOPs, then who in their right mind would buy them if the profit margin is only 6% to 7%? AND ... all the managers now have crap coverage for higher cost for themselves and their dependents. That means the key people are gong to look for work elsewhere or change careers and in turn that means whoever is buying this mess is going to have ro come up with a new way of doing business or risk going under. I can’t see anything other than these restaurants going downhill in service, quality and I see prices going up. This business model is on a downward trajectory due to Obamacare and Minimum Wage crap and yet some company is buying this? WTF?
As for minimum wage now trending to a ‘livable wage’, I have actually witnessed businesses going out of business because of it; shut down, doors closed, windows boarded up. Restaurant work for most workers is not supposed to be a longtime career choice. It’s a job you get on the way to something else. Only the managers are expected to be longterm and without them these kinds of businesses go belly up.
I agree with everything the article says but I am left wondering what’s going on behind the sale.
Back to Obanacare, we need President Cruz to do what he says he will do and that is to repeal every word of Obamacare. Why?
First, because the coverage is poorer than what it was before Obamacare and costs more!
Second, the federal government needs to get the f*ck out of people’s lives!
Third, there are far better health care models such as retainer fee medicine that require ***zero*** federal government involvement.
And many other reasons exist as well but the overriding reason is that Obamacare does not improve healthcare, it does not raise the standard of living. It is a bad idea and it needs to be repealed as soon as possible.
