If the first decade and a half is any guide, the 21st century will not be known as the era of the middle class in the U.S.
The middle class shrunk in all 50 states between 2000 and 2013, and median income, adjusted for inflation, was lower at the end of 2013 in the vast majority of states than it was in 2000, according to a new study by the Pew Charitable Trusts Stateline. The analysis, conducted by Statelines Tim Henderson, defines middle class as individuals earning between 67 percent and 200 percent of the states median income.
The study analyzed self-reported data from the Census Bureau through the American Community Survey that samples a percentage of the population including illegal immigrants as well as other data.
In most states, the growing percentage of households paying 30 percent (the federal standard for housing affordability) or more of their income on housing illustrates that it is increasingly difficult for many American families to make ends meet, wrote Henderson. {cool mouse over map is here}
The findings could have some interesting implications for the 2016 presidential race, since the plight of the middle class in states currently governed by some presidential hopefuls is particularly grim.
Wisconsin was the single worst performer, with the percentage of residents in the middle class falling 5.7 percentage points, from 54.6 percent to 48.9 percent over the period studied. Inflation-adjusted median income in the Badger State plunged from $60,344 in 2000 to $51,467 in 2013.

Also, in the article they blame republican governors for the problem in each of their respective states; never mentioning Obamas economic policies or any other democratic governor. I found that interesting.
Here is a link to the map.
Karl Marx HATED the middle class.
He wanted them DEAD.
Using Marx’s ideas (ANY of his ideas) to help the middle class is like using Hitler’s ideas to help the Jews.
But middle class Marxists keep voting for it, so what do you want me to say?
Blame the Commie pink fag Kenyan.
Who is it that get’s to define all of this “class” stuff, anyway?
what did people expect from a more centralized government? did they expect the state to save them, by voting for a Federal government that does not respect the 10th?
I also find it interesting that they used the year 2000 as the starting point when most of the damage has happened under Obama’s watch. Pew is left-wing, though, so they couldn’t use a time frame that just showed Obama’s reign of error...
One metric to define who’s middle class? What percentage they spend on rent/mortgage a month?
Since when has this been the standard, de facto, single criteria to determine who’s middle class?
Further consider that many of these states have been run this way into the ground by democrats and some only recently changed hands and reversed course by Republicans.
There are various reasons for the middle class destruction.
Set up to discredit Walker.
Yep. By golly, Wisconsin comes in as the worst. Wonder how that happened?
soetoro; doing to the middle class what stalin did to the Kulaks without the gulags; yet...
The Kenyan’s reign as king has been a great success. America is collapsing.
Paging Liz “the middle class is getting hammered” Warren.
