Federally-mandated changes to school lunches backed by first lady Michelle Obama helped cause an unprecedented drop in the number of students eating lunch, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
The GAO cited two factors stemming from the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which caused a decrease in the number of children eating school lunch each day: school childrens issues with palatability and federally-mandated increases in the price of school lunches.
Several factors likely influenced the recent decreases in lunch participation, and while the extent to which each factor affected participation is unclear, state and local officials reported that the decreases were influenced by changes made to comply with the new lunch content and nutrition standards, the report reads.
The federal lunch requirements which went into effect at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year forced school districts to offer more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat milk, while cutting back on meat and sodium.

If the goal was to have fat kids eat less, then goal achieved.
All the kids are eating less.
It’s funny. I used to say the same thing about Hillary when she was first lady. Who elected her?
“It took a special level of incompetence by mooche, government level incompetence, to get students to long for the good ole days of student lunches.”
You must be right. I can’t recall ever hearing much good about the palatability of most school lunches before these changes, so the new stuff must be really bad. Probably doesn’t help that in most places, from what I’ve heard, the slop is prepared in advance off-site and then brought in and reheated. That works OK for some things (or if done with care - I’ve had some good catered meals that were produced off-site), but many things lose color, flavor, and appearance when prepared so long ahead of time. Of course most of this stuff is produced by the lowest bidder for a contract, with price and meeting the government nutrition regulations foremost, and the looks and palatability of the food somewhat down the list from there.
I’m sure that the food tasting like crap had much to do with the decline.
Because most of the time they don't really care about collecting Z money. They just want to claim that they are going to so they can spend Z immediately. If Z doesn't come in then they "must" increase some other tax to make up the difference.
Moochelle was never elected to squat
Who the hell is she to force anything on anyone especially with her dietary habits
Shelf ass angry wookie
I see what you did there... ;)
In a NORMAL WORLD this would be Good News!
Moms and Dads would return to packing lunches for their kids and not shipping them off to the, ‘indoctrination stations’ at 6am each day for FREE Taxpayer Funded Breakfast, then picking them up (if they remember!) sometime after FREE Taxpayer Funded Supper!
But, we no longer have ANY semblance of normality in ANY area of our lives, so...never mind!
I can’t tell you how glad I am that my child-rearing years are well behind me! It was hard enough explaining to my boys that Bill Clinton was NOT the ‘Greatest President Ever.’ Gawd! The de-programming that went on around Our Dinner Table was LEGION!
And take out the salt which was one of her requirements and it becomes wallpaper paste.
I am currently a resident of the VA Hospital La Jolla, Ca and we had a special lunch today, Tenderloin of Beef, mandated by the VA to be cooked to no less than medium WELL. Typical, use an expensive cut of meat and destry it by over cooking.
Meanwhile today at Sidwell Friends...
Whatever they call something, it’s the exact opposite. Healthy and hunger free? Neither. Just like the affordable care act.
On math test days food with more sugar... sad days - more chocolate.
Best thing to do for the kids is provide them with plenty of options and let them choose the food they feel like eating... Charge by the pound and make it a buffet.
