There Is No Difference Between Bush And Walker On Immigration
Townhall ^ | March 18, 2015 | Conn Carroll

Posted on 03/18/2015 9:40:54 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has run into a little bit of trouble on immigration again, this time forcing a communications aide off his staff after Democrats pushed out old tweets from the aide disparaging Rep. Steve King (R-IA), a well-known opponent of amnesty.

"In other news, I see Iowa is once again embarrassing itself, and the GOP, this morning. Thanks, guys," the aide, Liz Mair tweeted, referring to King's January 24th Iowa Freedom Summit where Walker, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Carly Fiorina, and other possible Republican presidential candidates spoke.

Walker's troubles with immigration began in January when opponents began circulating prior statements of his showing that Walker has endorsed both a "path to citizenship" generally and the Senate's Gang of 8 bill specifically.

Walker has since tried to walk those positions back, telling Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace on March 1st, "My view has changed, I’m flat-out saying it. Candidates can say that, sometimes they don’t."

And Walker's view on immigration has changed. Here he is on immigration in July of 2013: "You hear some people talk about border security and a wall and all that. To me, I don't know that you need any of that if you had a better, saner way to let people into the country in the first place."

And here is Walker in March 2015: "I've talked to people all across America. And the concerns I have is that we need to secure the border. We ultimately need to put in place a system that works. A legal immigration system that works. And part of doing this is put the onus on employers, getting them E-Verify and tools to do that."

So Walker has shifted from believing a secure border wasn't really necessary to now believing that it is.

But what about those illegal immigrants already here? What is Walker's position on that? Again, from March 1st:

WALLACE: The question was, can you envision a world where if these people paid a penalty, that they would have a path to citizenship? And you said, sure, that makes sense.

WALKER: I believe there's a way that you can do that. First and foremost, you've got to secure that border or none of these plans make any sense.

(emphasis added) Notice the present tense. Walker still believes that illegal immigrants currently in the United States should be given a path to citizenship, but only if you secure the border first, which is a not uncommon Republican position on immigration.

But how is it any different than Jeb Bush's position?

Here is Jeb from March 13:

It’s easy to say, ‘Well, anything you propose is amnesty,’ but that’s not a plan. That’s a sentiment, that’s not a plan. I think the best plan, the most realistic plan, the grown up plan, if you will, is once you control the border and you’re confident it’s not going to be another magnet, is to say, ‘Let’s let these folks achieve earned legal status where they work, where they come out of the shadows.’”

So both Walker and Bush believe we should "secure"/"control" the border first (whatever that means), and then, only after that is accomplished, can we give legal status/citizenship to illegal immigrants currently in the United States.

If there is any difference between Walker and Bush on immigration, I do not see it.

It’s my position no one can change their mind on the biggest, most threatening issue facing the American homeland. Considering what has occurred in the past 30 years with this endless violent lawless invasion, no way that can happen. We have an endless conga-line of Muslims and illegals entering...Nothing is more important than out homeland security.

These people change their minds to save their own self interest’s and their political butts.

I know that is conventional wisdom, but if you consider the huge amount of money illegal immigrants are costing us, perhaps shutting down all the goodies would do part of the work for us.

I am pretty sure, as governer of Wisconsin, that there is absolutely nothing he can DO in regards to that. There is a lot he can SAY, and while he hasn’t been clear enough, it also hasn’t helped that there are many that twist and distort what he says.

But that is quite a list of things he has DONE in Wisconsin.

Ask him about illegal immigration and Walker will say, 'secure the borders first,' which sounds fine, at first. Somehow the conversation then starts to become more ambiguous. From Huffpo:

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) broadened his support for a pathway to citizenship on Tuesday, the Wausau Daily Herald reports.

In a interview with the Daily Herald's editorial board, Walker said the government should "fix things for people already here." He continued that if the current process for citizenship wasn't so "cumbersome," there wouldn't be problems with people living in the United States without documentation.

Walker also dismissed concerns over border security, an argument frequently used by other Republicans against reforming the U.S. immigration system.

“You hear some people talk about border security or a wall or all that,” Walker said. “To me, I don’t know that you need any of that if you had a better, saner way to let people into the country in the first place.”

Walker then drew attention to Wisconsin's reliance on the labor of individuals who may or may not have entered the country legally.

“If people want to come here and work hard and benefit, I don’t care whether they come from Mexico or Ireland or Germany or Canada or South Africa or anywhere else,” Walker said. “I want them here.”

Now that's not so ambiguous. Looks like Walker's plan is one of those "we can't deport..." amnesty rackets that follow for those who got in. What do you bet that the 'secure the borders' plan comes with a time limit?

a garbage candidate who is utterly without talent or skill or insight or knowledge or honesty,

Well that is not Walker for sure. Walker is our best chance. He is brilliant at getting results....he has the experience as a Governor in a blue state and succeeding in signing conservative bills. He isn’t a lawyer or senator or elitist from a goofy Ivy school. Walker is perfect for the job.

This is 2015, not 1955. Mass deportation of all illegals is untenable politically, which I’m sure everyone here, you included, knows.

Creating conditions that induce self-deportation is well within our means.

Between the Democrats/Socialists, RINO GOPe and the Communists/Greens, that is NEVER going to happen. In my mostly Hispanic neighborhood, there are government supported workers who make sure that everyone here gets signed up for every welfare program possible, as soon as can be.

Does it bother you that Walker hired a woman who is pro abortion, pro gay marriage, and pro amnesty as his communications director?

Does that have anything whatsoever to do with the job? Is this phantom woman running for President? No?????? Well I won’t vote for this supposed woman for President.

I’m assuming the positions you listed for Walker are after his “Whitehouse Road” conversion.

Prior to that, he has several quotes saying a border wall was unnecessary, and that he supported a path to citizenship for illegals.

Which Walker should I believe? The one who stated those positions before he was campaigning for the nomination….or the one who is now is now trying to win over conservatives?

He is brilliant at getting results

The concern is that the result he may achieve is legalization of 13 million people

and an associated permanent demographic transformation of the country.

Eisenhower employed mass deportation during his Presidency. Last time I looked Ike is considered one of our best Presidents.

Our current politicians lack the will to enforce deportation. They put currying favor with the vaunted latino vote way ahead of little things like honoring their oath to enforce our laws.

But you’re right, just demonstrating the willingness to enforce the deportation law will encourage plenty of illegal foreign nationals to return home. That happened when Eisenhower enforced the law.

This article doesn’t even mention the recent resignation of Liz Mair from the Walker campaign.

I’m so happy this has happened. I was very upset when she was hired - because she is gung-ho amnesty - and I think that’s why Walker’s statements of late have been so confusing. I think Liz was telling Walker that he HAD to be for immigration.

These newby candidates (national elections), get used and abused by “consultants” who swear they are the greatest thing since sliced bread - but they usually have an agenda. I believe her agenda was to get Walker to support Amnesty. Thankfully, it didn’t work.

I believe Walker is a straight shooter - and accepted her at face value. I have a feeling she did not truthfully represent herself.

Now tell me he isn’t a conservative. Many times I have seen.

It all goes away with amnesty, because Latinos vote 70% Democrat.

We saw how determined Boehner & Co. were to cave to the Democrats on DHS funding and Obama’s unlawful executive orders funding the ongoing invasion, after 35 Republicans took a stand.
Like Obama, Boehner will fight like a tiger if the opponents are conservatives.

Yes, the Democrats and Republicans are one and the same. There is no substantive difference between them, and Walker is a Republican.

The little white mouse in my pocket says—we need a Conservative party. Now.

That conversion included hiring as his communication coordinator a gal who personally believes in amnesty and worked politically to get it advanced. He fired her because conservatives raised a red flag. But he also hired her AFTER his supposed conversion. Even if honest mistake it sows doubt about his sincerity and about his judgment.

I wish he wasn’t wrong on this because I’d rather only sing his praises. But I’m going to look at the entire person.
