There Is No Difference Between Bush And Walker On Immigration
Townhall ^ | March 18, 2015 | Conn Carroll

Posted on 03/18/2015 9:40:54 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has run into a little bit of trouble on immigration again, this time forcing a communications aide off his staff after Democrats pushed out old tweets from the aide disparaging Rep. Steve King (R-IA), a well-known opponent of amnesty.

"In other news, I see Iowa is once again embarrassing itself, and the GOP, this morning. Thanks, guys," the aide, Liz Mair tweeted, referring to King's January 24th Iowa Freedom Summit where Walker, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Carly Fiorina, and other possible Republican presidential candidates spoke.

Walker's troubles with immigration began in January when opponents began circulating prior statements of his showing that Walker has endorsed both a "path to citizenship" generally and the Senate's Gang of 8 bill specifically.

Walker has since tried to walk those positions back, telling Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace on March 1st, "My view has changed, I’m flat-out saying it. Candidates can say that, sometimes they don’t."

And Walker's view on immigration has changed. Here he is on immigration in July of 2013: "You hear some people talk about border security and a wall and all that. To me, I don't know that you need any of that if you had a better, saner way to let people into the country in the first place."

And here is Walker in March 2015: "I've talked to people all across America. And the concerns I have is that we need to secure the border. We ultimately need to put in place a system that works. A legal immigration system that works. And part of doing this is put the onus on employers, getting them E-Verify and tools to do that."

So Walker has shifted from believing a secure border wasn't really necessary to now believing that it is.

But what about those illegal immigrants already here? What is Walker's position on that? Again, from March 1st:

WALLACE: The question was, can you envision a world where if these people paid a penalty, that they would have a path to citizenship? And you said, sure, that makes sense.

WALKER: I believe there's a way that you can do that. First and foremost, you've got to secure that border or none of these plans make any sense.

(emphasis added) Notice the present tense. Walker still believes that illegal immigrants currently in the United States should be given a path to citizenship, but only if you secure the border first, which is a not uncommon Republican position on immigration.

But how is it any different than Jeb Bush's position?

Here is Jeb from March 13:

It’s easy to say, ‘Well, anything you propose is amnesty,’ but that’s not a plan. That’s a sentiment, that’s not a plan. I think the best plan, the most realistic plan, the grown up plan, if you will, is once you control the border and you’re confident it’s not going to be another magnet, is to say, ‘Let’s let these folks achieve earned legal status where they work, where they come out of the shadows.’”

So both Walker and Bush believe we should "secure"/"control" the border first (whatever that means), and then, only after that is accomplished, can we give legal status/citizenship to illegal immigrants currently in the United States.

If there is any difference between Walker and Bush on immigration, I do not see it.

Let’s be fair. He’s been saying security first for a while now. I can’t recall Bush or McCain saying they support a security only trigger.

And I gotta say, It’s kinda silly to say you’d only believe someone if they said they’d finish the border fence. If they’re full of crap, they’re full of crap.

“.....just because your dumb and don’t pay attention isn’t Walker’s problem.”

Yeah, just vote for him dummy! You don’t even need to engage your intellect because he says so!

Naps,

Although I prefer another coming candidate, I might be able to be convinced to support Walker should he win the primary. However, nearly every post you make hardens me against Walker. You either need to change your degrading nature and work to positively convince FReepers, or you need to admit to being a sleeper troll for Hillary.

One thing Mr. Cruz has never struck me as is an elitist.

He has struck me as the exact opposite of an elitist in fact.

You bet I remember SB1070. Californians who worked for Prop 187 regard it with a mix of envy and admiration.

Please post the article that quotes Walker as saying he would finish the border fence. I have not seen that as of yet.

There’s a reason that Sarah Palin endorsed him.

I do remember those days and the tactics we were dealing with at the time.

It was a mess. And now, it seems we’re headed right back into the same type of thing.

Your comments were good. CGG was very good. I miss her.

Thanks for that link. I went back and read your post as well as others there.

I think a Texan could get away with supporting Perry, whereas when they now support Walker the same way with RNC (seeming general) agreement, it becomes quite obvious.

Re-read my post, I said he would START to have credibility, not that I would necessarily believe him, and seriously, why would I believe anyone who does not give me specifics about his plan when he states he wants to secure the border first, no matter how long he has been stating it, and especially with Walker's previous Pro-Amnesty and Pro-Open Border policies?

The Dems don’t have to worry about a thing; we’ll destroy all of our candidates in short order.

There will be no candidate pure enough, conservative enough, or “ready for Prime time” for the most pure among us here. You folks who are bitching about Walker would turn on Cruz in a second if he dares deviate one jot from any position.

I have a challenge: why done you perfect conservatives run for office and show Cruz, Walker, and the rest of the field how it’s done. We know you folks would have a perfect record...right!

Isn’t any from what I’ve seen. Feel free to search for yourself though.
He has said security first which could include a fence among other tools.

But as I said. If you don’t believe him, why believe him at all. How does using your personal magic words lend him more credibility ?

So if the candidate is Walker, you won’t be voting. Oh well.

The problem I see is that Liz Mair was a known quantity when Walker hired her.

She’s been a major GOP campaign player for years, and she not only didn’t keep her views hidden she posted them for the whole world to see on her own website.

If her views contradicted Walker’s own past positions we could attribute it to sloppy vetting. But that isn’t the case. Reagan and Kennedy both said ‘personnel is policy’. Who you hire to work for you is where you are headed.

A couple of days ago I posted Liz Mair in her own words from her own site:

“Liz Nair in her own words...”

...and here she is:

” I am a dual US-UK citizen, and the NHS was my primary source of health care for many, many years.”

“I’m actually a long-time gay rights supporter. I am on the board of the Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry. I was on the board of GOProud. I’ve been on the record as supporting same-sex marriage for far longer than the vast majority of Democrats or liberals.”

” I’m pro-gay-marriage and I’m also pro-choice, though I have some very major moral objections to abortion in most circumstances and would never have an abortion myself. “

“12. You want to deport all unlawful immigrants.

Unless we’re talking gang members or people involved in major financial crimes or sex criminals, no, I’m actually basically for amnesty. I’ll even use the word, unlike a lot of people.”

“15. You’re a RINO.

I have worked for, and like, a lot of more moderate Republicans. And I am a social liberal, and a big softie on immigration. So, yes, kinda”

“17. You spend more time trashing Republicans than Democrats.

Sometimes this is true. But the thing is, there are so many other people who trash Democrats so effectively that I’d just look too second-rate if I focused exclusively on that.”

“20. You’re not even American, how are you qualified to opine on American politics/culture/history/whatever?

I am American. I am also British.”

Because I’m bigger and uglier than Christy and about to lose my legs from edema and infections? But you’ll say that FDR and Greg Abbott ran, right? I’ll get behind Walker vs. Bush, Christie, Graham or Huckabee, but we’re not at that point yet, are we? Who was leading in the polls in March of 2007 or 2011?

“Don’t forget that Walker panders to the La Raza groups in Wisconsin. He willfully and unapologetically endorsed the hispanic labor leader, Cesar Chavez, a known domestic terrorist, for a state holiday in Wisconsin. This endorsement WAS ONLY ONE YEAR AGO!!!”

Haha, OK, I am only laughing because I could use this same argument as PROOF that Scott Walker is anti amnesty and against illegal immigration. ;-)

Did you know that Cesar Chavez was a virulent opponent of illegal “wetbacks swimming across the border to steal good american jobs?” As a union head, he was more interested in protecting his American members from those “wetbacks.”

I like to throw that at leftists and watch their heads spin...

You can distort this debate all you want to, but history shows, that GOP candidates use that term to mean almost anything and most of the time, when used, it is because they really don't mean to secure the border.

No magic words, just a detailed, declared approach to "Securing the Border".

Ironically enough Cesar Chavez was a major opponent of illegal immigration. He understood that his own farmworkers were the first to be harmed by it.

The guest worker and education visas seems to be where the jerks come from, this is no reflection on the people who legally immigrate here because they want to cast in their lot with us.

I really think we need to wake up quick to the fact that we are being used as a sort of social services job training program for the rest of the world at the expense of our own bright young people. The people who are taking advantage of this just think we’re stupid and so deserve what we get.
