LAS VEGAS (AP) A veteran Las Vegas police officer has been suspended and accused of misdemeanor battery after a body camera he was wearing provided evidence that he injured a woman he arrested for littering and loitering for the purpose of prostitution, authorities said Tuesday.
An expert said it might be one of the first cases in which a body camera has led to criminal charges against a police officer.
Officer Richard Scavone, 43, used "not only excessive, but also unreasonable" force in the 5 a.m. Jan. 6 scuffle in a neon-lit industrial area one block west Las Vegas Strip resorts, Clark County Undersheriff Kevin McMahill told reporters outside Las Vegas police headquarters.
"We're not going to shy away from bringing these incidents to light when a body camera captures actions of one of our officers that do not appear to be within the confines of law and policy," McMahill said.

Why are police unions fighting them then?

Why are police unions fighting them then?
Police unions aren't for the good cops.
First off, these unions are never run by the best and brightest. secondly, they have in place systems where they can protect their own in other ways. but it’s becoming harder and harder to maintain those corrupt practices so I think in time they will appreciate the cameras. but right now they are just focusing on “the one” that these things nail IMO
The headline made me think he was wearing the camera with the lens pointed at it’s battery case.
Hey yahoo, thanks for broadcasting the cop was at fault. Now how ‘bout reporting on the cop being in the right and perp is a thug.................Yeah I know, never happen.
As far as police unions opposing body cameras, I don’t doubt it. For me it’s like red lite cams or urinalysis tests, if your not doing anything wrong you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
Later
Unions are afraid cops can get caught by inappropriate/illegal actions..and yes, they could...and the images may not really show the dangers the officer faced..but in the long run, they’ll protect a lot of cops from outright lies of charges of police brutality..
It could have been more confusing:
Vegas police officer wearing body camera facing battery case to be charged.
Reminds me of a painful scene from "The Punisher."
Why then do we have a Fourth Amendment? If you aren’t doing anything wrong, then why are you worried about the police coming and searching your home? That whole “if your not doing anything wrong you shouldn’t have anything to worry about” line is dangerous.
I understand. But the majority gets their way in these cases. So, we have cop unions.
I know. I come from a long line of cops.
God bless.
The Las Vegas PD has a real ugly reputation. This might be evidence that it trying to change.
JBT Ping list
The prisons are full of those who thought they were not, “doing anything wrong”.
For the life of me, I will never understand why we tolerate fascist authoritarian p***ks like you on this forum.
You probably have no issue with the NSA spying on us, or the militarization of police, huh?
