Did you know Hertz is putting cameras in rental cars!? This is bullsh*t. I wonder if it says they can tape me in my Hertz contract. [snip] The system cant be turned off from what I could tell. Further investigation revealed that the camera can see the entire inside of the car. I know rental car companies have been tracking the speed and movements of their vehicles for years but putting a camera inside the cabin of the vehicle is taking their need for information a little TOO FAR.

How about installing a smoke detector instead? Just sayin’ it ain’t about smoking.
Dang, no more hanky-panky in the backseat.
What I do have a problem with is their idiotic lie - they have no plans to use them? Right...
So consider this: they just lost the business rental market. You and a coworker going to a business meeting? No discussions in the car, no privacy anymore. Heck, even by yourself, no business phone calls. In a Hertz car you could no longer talk about anything even remotely competition sensitive, or any management issues with personnel (PII anyone?). etc. etc.
I don't know how big of a part of Hertz's revenue business travelers represent, but I'd bet they just lost most of it. They won't be getting my business.
As long as they clearly state in the contract (not hidden in small print) I agree.
But, for some reason I don’t think they want you to know they are doing this.
Do you have any idea where the camera(s) is (are) located?
If there's language in the contract that forbids that, make it either an "accident" or find another agency.
Put a piece of duct tape over the lens.
Today, an option ordered by Hertz.
Tomorrow, Federally mandated equipment on all new vehicles.
Solution: Duct Tape. 1001 uses!
You have the same problem with On Star in your vehicle. They can hear everything you say at the touch of a button.
If they are not going to use them then I think it is time to sell Hertz Stock as they are obviously wasting money on frivilous things....
I wonder if taking out the fuse(s) would kill the camera.
Riiiiiight.
Keep in mind that Hertz also owns Dollar Thrifty and they exchange vehicles with these Neverlost systems in them routinely .
The last car my wife and I rented to drive from Atlanta, Georgia to Northern, Ohio.
The car was fairly new and had only 8000 miles on the Odometer.
But it smelled like an ashtray. The smell was not oppressive when we first got the car and we were in a hurry and since the rental office was really busy so we decided that we had no choice but to take the car.
But once we were on the road it became more apparent that the car had received next to no cleaning since the last time it was rented. My wife discovered that a soft drink or some other sticky liquid had been spilled in the car.
She cleaned up the mess as best she could and we continued on our way.
Within two ours of picking up the car I called the rental company and complained about the numerous problems with the car and got them to drop $50 off the bill.
About the time we hit Ohio the outside temperature dropped about 30 degrees and we had to use the heat. Then the smell got really rank.
But the 15 hour trip in that car was nearly intolerable and should have been comped completely.
