From the mundane to the exotic, these are some of the new cars we were diving in 1965.

Sweet! I’ve always loved that car.
Sorry, I wasn’t clear. There was one version of the BelAire where there was no pillar between the front and back doors. I thought they called that version a hardtop, and the one with the pillar just a four door sedan. But maybe my memory is failing me.
Buddy of mine is struggling to finish a Daytona Coupe replica. He got licensed to build their kits for customers if he finds one. Alas, I do not have the available funds and likely never will.
Dad’s ‘55 Plymmie had the same look.
I hear you. I don’t have that kind of money either but I enjoy looking at them.
Well I’m only 6’3” tall, but long arms and long legs,,,, just bumping into too many things! The Manta was perfect as I could get my steel guitar case in the back seat.
My first car was a 1953 MG TD, purchased from a neighbor in fall 1964.
English cars which are 11 years old were NOT reliable, then.
My Dad traded cars with me from time to time, and he was only about 38 at that time. Sometimes the MG broke down when he had it, which was better than doing so, when I had it.
Teenage girls in SoCal in 1964-65 really liked that car, and it didn’t hurt that I drove it !!
I had a ‘67 Belvedere, pretty much the same car.
Wear helmets? I don’t wear a helmet in my car!!! Ha!!!
The older cars have a classic look to them. They were made to impress. The newer ones lean more toward safety than first impressions. There is a video on Youtube (would post it but am heading out) that shows a 1950’s chevyt and a 2012 chevy running into each other. The 2012 destroyed the 50’s lead sled and the “crash test dummy” would survive the newer car over the older.
Ping me when you post "What we were driving 65 years ago: cars of 1935?"
Far more interesting to us old codgers...{:-)
It was a four door hard top. It had a lower roof profile than the boxy sedans.
Then there was the two door hardtop. It was called a "hardtop" because when all the windows were rolled down, and you opened a door, there were no posts or window frames....just like a convertible door.
Please take me off this ping that I never asked to be on. Thanks. :)
I too had a 61 lancer. People would ask “that a valiant?” “No it’s a lancer” I’d say. Then they would say “A WHAT?”
Only mine had a 170 slant six with a 1 barrel.
Dad bought it new and I drove it till I got the satellite. I imagine you would have to re cam a 225 to get the 4 bbl to work properly.
60 plym Had one. In about the same shape
They were a rare car, alright. You can find stuff about them on the net if you look hard enough. I think it was called a HyperPak or something like that.
So?
Do you support the government taking over cars, and making people wear helmets?
Do you also think that over 60 years, that cars would not have improved naturally, from simple technology and market forces, instead of from government?
