(CNSNews.com) - The number of beneficiaries on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, has topped 46,000,000 for 40 straight months, according to new data released by the Department of Agriculture (USDA).

In December 2014, the latest month reported, there were 46,252,064 Americans on food stamps. Food stamp recipients have exceeded 46 million in each month since September 2011.

Food Stamp-Annual-2014

The 46,252,064 on food stamps in December was down from the 46,263,096 on food stamps in November--a decline of 11,032.

As of July, the national population was 318,857,056, the Census Bureau estimates. Thus, the 46,252,064 on food stamps equaled 14.5 percent of the population.

While the number of beneficiaries declined over the month, the number of households on food stamps increased. There were 22,724,435 households on food stamps in December, which was up 28,141 from the 22,696,294 households on food stamps in November.

As of September, according to the Census Bureau, there were 115,831,000 households in the country. Thus, the 22,724,435 households on food stamps in December equaled 19.6 percent of the nation’s households.

Households on food stamps got an average benefit of $259.98 during the month, and total benefits for the month cost taxpayers $5,907,873,849.

In 1969, the average participation in the SNAP program stood at 2,878,000. In 2014, average participation grew to 46,536,000, an increase of 1516.96 percent.

Doesn’t this food stamp demand drive up prices for everyone else?

Twenty percent...20%!...of the nation is on welfare.

Isn’t that what food stamps are?

And that doesn’t include WIC, SNAP, SSDI and a whole helluva lot of acronyms I not only forget but don’t even know what they represent.

That reminds me. I have to do my taxes. Got to pay for all of this. Why oh why do I work for a living?

end of rant

This program needs to be ended. The tiny number of people who ACTUALLY NEED help buying food should get it from churches and other charities. And even when they do that, I say just give them a few bags of dried beans, rice and potatoes until they get back on their feet.

Want fancier food? Well, there’s your incentive to get a freakin’ job.

These are traded for drugs and weapons.

It is engineered by the DH”S” and

Depends upon how you look at it. Since the productive members of society have to pay to feed the unproductive members via taxes, those contributors have less to spend on everything, including food. So, you can think of it as taking food out of a productive mouth to shove it down the throat of some unthankful deadbeat. But, I digress...

Thank the lobbyists for Kraft, Heinz, Tyson, Campbells, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, Albertsons, etc. etc. etc.

They’ve solved the conundrum of how you sell your product to people who have no money.

I agree 100% with what you wrote. Except that there will always be a very small percent of the population who will never have a job due to mental or physical disabilities. What should be done for these people?

Food banks and local charities can only do so much.

I can personally vouch for the abuse in the Food Stamp program. It is rampant. IMHO, at least 20-25% of the money devoted to Food Stamps is abused.

My former neighbor, a homemaker with four kids and little formal education, whose husband was gunned down in the back of the head by an armed robber.

Her I have no issue giving food stamps. The vast majority however....

You have identified an issue I’ve complained about for years!
NOBODY talks about the price inflation created by the artificial demand of EBT.
