WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fresh from an embarrassing rebuke at the hands of conservatives in his own party, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner played down any risk to his continuing leadership on Sunday, saying disagreements with fellow Republicans were merely over strategy, not goals.
Asked if he could lead the fractious House, Boehner said, "I think so. I'm not going to suggest it's easy, because its not."
The House narrowly averted cutting off funds to the Department of Homeland Security on Friday after Boehner failed to rein in conservative Republicans. They were insisting on tying the issue to blocking President Barack Obama's move to shield millions of illegal immigrants from deportation.
"We do have some members who disagree from time to time over the tactics that we decide to employ. But remember that Republicans are united in this idea that the president has far exceeded his constitutional authority," Boehner said in an interview on the CBS program "Face the Nation."
Boehner narrowly won a third term as speaker on Jan. 6, surviving a stiff challenge from 25 conservative Republicans that signaled a possible growing split within the party as it assumed full control of Congress.
A faction of dissident House Republicans oppose him because they say he has done too little to cut spending and fight Obama's immigration and healthcare policies.
Boehner's failure to corral enough votes to fund the department for three weeks - they settled for one week - again raised questions over whether he could lead House Republicans.
Steve Scalise, the third-ranking House Republican, noted to the "Fox News Sunday" program that the selection of a House speaker took place "just a few weeks ago."
"And that vote is over. We are moving forward," Scalise said. "... And obviously he's speaker. He's going forward."

Forward, where have we heard that before?
Is Boehner really a under-rated tactical magician ..
ready to be put out to pasture? (with a few others)
“Yes, let’s move uhhh Forward, Mr. Scalise. “
Yeeeeah....and I’m still batting 1,000 since November.
A strategy of capitulation and surrender is not a goal.
... or a compromised, cowardly, orange buffoon?
Been doing a terrible job of leadership since 2006, but he won’t stand aside, and a majority of house republicans keep supporting him.
This is where we are. Unless leadership changes, there will be no changes.
“Steve Scalise, the third-ranking House Republican, noted to the “Fox News Sunday” program that the selection of a House speaker took place “just a few weeks ago. And that vote is over. We are moving forward,” Scalise said”
Yeah, well we put your, McCarthy’s, and Boehner’s sorry rear ends in office just three months ago Scalise, and already you are “moving backward” after lying to us about how tough you were going to be.
So, you want to know why you’re regarded as pantywaists by the base?
“Boehner defends his U.S. House leadership”
There’s nothing to defend, John.
What leadership??? Has anyone seen anything other than caving to Obama and Reid, who are still in change of this ball-less GOP Congress? The entire GOPe apparatus ought to be sent to the Villages to play golf with the lousy Chamber of Amnesty fossils.
The problem is that a majority of Republicans are in sync with Boehner’s deference to Pelosi .Boehner works for the DNC not the Republicans or the Citizens.
Boehner has more GOP votes for Obama’s amnesty than Nancy has Dem votes. They’ll combine to pass this treason in the end.
Thank God for the 50 or so conservatives to at least put up a worthy fight.
What fight? The fight to be had was a couple of months ago, when Boehner was reelected Speaker. The Texas delegation has been extremely disappointing.
Mike McCaul from this TX Congressional district is lousy. A conservative should try to take him out in the primary next year. We are new to this district and didn’t know better, but we will never vote for him again.
We got rid of our weasel, Eric Cantor who had bags and bags of money. It can be done.
Kenny Marchant needs to go too. Our representatives have been neutered in DC.
