Oregon first-grader humiliated by school’s punishment after being 1 minute late to class
NY Daily News ^

The family of an Oregon first-grader is outraged that his school forced the boy to sit by himself during lunch as punishment for being late.

The boy’s grandmother, Laura Hoover, took to Facebook to protest his retribution with photos of Hunter sulking into a cardboard wall blocking his view of a cafeteria bustling with his peers.

“His momma’s car sometimes doesn’t like to start right up. Sometimes he’s a couple minutes late to school. Yesterday, he was one minute late,” Hoover wrote. “This is what his momma discovered they do to punish him.”

His mother, Nicole Garloff, came to check on little Hunter at Lincoln Elementary in Grants Pass on Tuesday and ended up taking him home. She found him staring at his stark food tray in tears over the whole ordeal.

I a 5th grade teacher who didn’t really like boys. Of course, I loved it because I hated goofy, obnoxious boys at that age. Our neighbor told my mom that her son went almost the whole year with out a desk or shoelaces because both were constantly being taken away for leaning back in his chair or having his shoelaces untied.

One of her own sons didn’t even go to her funeral, he said she always hated boys.

Humiliation is not a way to handle little kids.

Why punish the child, when he didn’t cause his tardiness?

You want to punish ME for something, fine, I’ll accept what I have coming. May you rot in hell for punishing any child for something HE/SHE had no control over.

My son was made to sit in the hall and when he tried to look in, the stupid imbecile “teacher” taped paper over the glass.

They do that because the kid in the hall stares in at the other kids, makes faces, and distracts them. If a kid is being really disruptive, a little time out in the hall is sometimes necessary.

Seriously, this is an outrage?

this is why kids have social behavior issues now. I know, like everyone else, it can sometimes be difficult to watch, but this is just a kid being taught one of lifes lessons. Even if it isn't his fault for being late, he now knows excuses don't matter, plan ahead and make sure you are on time. He obviously isn't learning it from his guardians. He needs to view his "parent" and incompetent because they are... they can't even get him to school on time. Broken car or not, find a way. Your variables aren't everyone elses problem. Heck, my kid had to spend lunch recess doing dishes in the school kitchen for a week one time for speaking out of turn. Guess what? It worked. He keeps his mouth shut in class now.

My kids know... unless your teacher hits you, don't come home whining. School is their domain, their rules. It's their job to find a way to work within it like everyone else. Life is full of CEO's, police, peers, etc who don't see life they way you do and you have to learn to cope with it in a non-destructive manner. My dad said it just like everyone elses: pick you battles carefully and be willing to see them through to the end. This simply isn't one of them

They had to do something when they abolished corporal punishment. Parents who think their kids are precious, sensitive little poppets who are beyond being punished for acting out of line are part of the reason society is going down the pan.

You said it. They don't want their snowflake punished, EVER, but you know they breathe a sigh of relief every morning when that kid heads off to school and the house is "quiet at last!" Because they aren't disciplining them at home either.

I’m not sure a first grader can be punished into making his mom not be flakey so it doesn’t happen again. Of course that’s if he wasn’t goofing off himself or something despite what the grandmother says.

They do that because the kid in the hall stares in at the other kids, makes faces, and distracts them.

Many parents have no idea what what sort of things their kid is really doing at school.

My son is there to learn not to make this fat stupid teacher feel good. If he is out in the hall, he is learning that abusive people are cruel and nothing else.

When I was in school, they marked your late arrivals as "Tardy" and put them on your report card like your grades and other behavior.

IMO, being tardy, especially as a result of the parent, should not give the teacher or school the right to treat the kid like a dunce or an outcast. This is psychologically demeaning.

There probably is more to this story than is revealed, but I still think this is archaic-style shaming and shouldn't be tolerated in the public schools. If he can't get to school on time because of his mom's car problems, it should be a problem discussed between the school and her, not the kid. If he has too many late arrivals over the school year, and the school wants to de-enroll him, fine.

This type of behavior on the part of the teacher and school administrators is as juvenile and childish as young kids can be. Where are the mature adults in this school?

Yep. Teachers sometimes know more than parents about what that child is really like. Man, I invited a mom to come into the classroom at sit with her son once, and she came in the back door of the classroom and her boy didn't know she was in there for a minute. He just kept up with his mouth, and his acting out, and his smirking and yelling... really nasty. His mom's eyes just bugged out, and when he turned around and saw her I thought they would both faint.

It's a cherished memory.

Because they aren't disciplining them at home either.

A little discipline at home can be very salubrious.

Same here. I’m 73. It happened to me in 9th grade, the teacher’s name was Chad Foreman, I was sitting three seats back from the front in the center row, and if the building were standing, I could point out my locker. I may not remember what I did every second last week, but I have not forgotten any detail of that moment. Never went back to a class reunion. Don’t tell me a moment like this for a little person won’t affect them.

On the other hand, if he is disrupting class then he is keeping other children from learning.

There is nothing abusive about punishing children for bad behavior.

Your son is learning from you that he should be able to do anything he wants, and the other children in the classroom are unimportant. I can see now why he was in the hallway. He gets his attitude from you.

You’re reading quite a lot more into this situation than is presented in the linked article, unless you have access to more complete information.

Do you?

The last thing anyone should be doing is calling in the CPS Nazis, unless there is clear evidence of parental abuse, such as unexplained bruises, wounds, obvious malnourishment, and the like.

Being late to class a few times doesn’t even close to that.

Stuff happens. Cars don’t start, flat tires, traffic, forgot homework, school buses are late. Do you think no kids are ever late to school? What happens if a teacher is late? People are late to work. And this is a little kid. He does not deserve to be shunned like this. If you really think social services should be contacted because he was a minute late, well, it’s people like you who get kids dragged into DSS hell.
