Not too long ago over my way, they found a guy laying on the ground dead, a bunch of scorch marks on the wall where a high voltage feed connected to a building, cutting tools, and a roll of shopped wire from somewhere indeterminate.
And they said of his death “we don’t now what happened.”
*lol*
Perhaps the would be thieves simply saw a huge cable and thought “Jackpot!”
