Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) havent spoken to each other in two weeks despite the shutdown fight gripping the Capitol, House Republicans said Wednesday.
During a closed-door House GOP conference meeting Wednesday morning, Boehner told Republicans that he hadnt spoken to McConnell recently despite the looming Feb. 28 deadline to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
He said he hadnt spoken to Mitch McConnell in a few weeks. We gave them a good bill. It funds the stuff were supposed to do, secure the borders, Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas) said after a morning conference meeting.
Another Republican said Boehner planned to talk to McConnell later Wednesday.
I dont have any readouts about their meetings, Stewart said. They update each other all the time.
I was a little surprised, Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) said of Boehners statement about the lack of communication with McConnell.
Their silence points to the friction between the two chambers when it comes to DHS funding, with Senate Republicans preparing to move a "clean" bill that does not overturn President Obama's executive action on immigration.
House conservatives are lining up against that plan, and Boehner declined to take a position on it.
Until the Senate does something, we're in a wait-and-see mode, Boehner said.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has reached out to Boehner about the importance of preventing a DHS shutdown Saturday, Rep. Xavier Becerra (Calif.), chairman of the Democratic Caucus, said Wednesday.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday warned that Senate Democrats wouldnt agree to McConnells new plan until Boehner promises to pass a clean spending bill, too. As part of the approach, McConnell also promised to bring a bill to the Senate floor that would defund Obamas immigration orders from last November.
House GOP leaders early Wednesday emerged from their conference meeting with no decision on next steps yet. Boehner repeated that hes waiting for the Senate to act before determining what the House will do.
Many House conservatives bashed McConnells plan while some Republicans expressed support for a clean bill.
Congress needs to fund DHS by the end of Friday or the department will shut down.
Will no one deliver me from these Republicrats?
I wouldn’t speak to either of them in two weeks either.
Can’t say I blame them....
OK!! Which FReeper is in charge of the B.S. Meter ?
No one is representing us anymore?
"I just want a plan that, at the end of the day, preserves the Constitution," Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA), who defeated former Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) last year, told reporters. "So however we get there, that's what I want."
Liar.
You work together and socialize.
Only a RINO could use sitting on their ass as an excuse.
I swear they want the country to go down the damn tubes as much as Barry, for different reasons and b/c they’d rather be in control as it sinks.
Good, right now Bohner is holding.
Lets not shut down DHS. Lets shut down both houses, impeach the _resident, and start over. Maybe then we can get some honest people.
He’s been too drunk.
Way to stand together and coordinate a winning strategy that results in a legislative victory for America, her constitution and her people, Republic*nts!
Our fearless leaders!
ever feeel like big Gubamint is a death trap?
McConnell is having his Shell polished
I've got it this morning. The DHS will get everything they want to to "keep us safe". Obama will get everything he wants to settle-in undocumented foreign guests, many now actually invited by the branch of government that is charged with enforcing federal immigration law. This is all knee-deep bovine scat. The Congress will not demand return of its legislative prerogatives. I would love to be wrong in a few days, but we've been down this road too many times with these big-talking, phony, GOP-e weaklings.
Thank you!!
