If Ronald Reagan ran today, where would he fall on the conservative spectrum?
Washington Post ^ | february 25, 2015

When conservatives gather Thursday for their annual confab there will be homages to Ronald Reagan everywhere. He’ll be mentioned in speeches, he’ll show up as a life-size cardboard cutout, and on posters and buttons. The event’s big dinner is in his name.

At the Conservative Political Action Conference, Reagan is king. And the many Republicans vying to be president will work feverishly to align with him. But do they?

Don’t mean to bash RR however I thought the disaster in Lebanon and the pullout afterwards was his biggest mistake

We’re in a far greater fix today than we were in 1980, even after the disastrous policies of Jimmy Carter. So, to be quite frank about it, we are in desperate need of leaders, from the bottom to the top, who are even greater than the great Ronald Wilson Reagan.

And that superior leadership must be exercised not just by some individual leader, but by hundreds, and thousands, and millions of leaders.

No, I am saying that Reagan instantly gave citizenship path to all illegals. No delay, no conditions!

Any republican trying to do that today would be burned at the stake on FR.

The country as a whole is more liberal today than during the 1980’s.

JFK would be a liberal democrat, Reagan called him a Marxist, and the election of JFK was the end of America, his more radical agenda destroyed us.

JFK cut taxes, engaged in pre-emptive military actions against the communists, and told the country to ask not what the country can do for you. Those are Conservative values.

But yes, the Democrats who followed have destroyed this great country.

No, Congress did that. A Democratic Congress. Bad enough they had to lie to Reagan to get him to sign it.

To say that “any Republican who would do that today etc.” implies that everyone was further left back when Simpson-Mazzoli became law.

Thank you! I’ve been saying this for years. JFK was a lot like a proto-Obama, he won by running to the right of Nixon just like Obama pretended to be more conservative on issues than McCain.

Although to Kennedy’s credit, I don’t question his patriotism like Obama.

They did that in the 10 years before he won the nomination back then. The GOPe haven’t changed at all in that regard.

All 3 items I listed can be easily checked on Google.

Government spending during 8 years of Reagan did indeed triple. It can be checked easily on various web sites.

Reagan gave instant amnesty to all illegals. It is well documented.

Just calling me names without providing links is not very helpful.

I have a difficult time seeing the inflection point in the Reagan years.

JFK gave us his lifelong goal of the 1965 Immigration Act which passed on his death, he unionized the government, created the homeless, was a complete idiot in foreign affairs and against the communists and he started the Vietnam war, and was a disaster as a president and was an incredibly sleazy and dishonest man who appears to have stolen the presidential election.

Reagan called him a Marxist in a private letter.

Yes congress did that. But Reagan fell for the lies and did not try enough vetoes to stop them. If had, and congress overrides the vetoes, my respect for Reagan would be triple higher from my already high respect for him.

Overall, Reagan was a very good and effective president. But I can not bury my head in the sand over the instant and general amnesty to illegals and tripling the size of federal spending.

This time you left off your third attack on Reagan, that you want us to "google".

Why did you do that.

JFK cut taxes?

His policy on communism was containment, not elimination. That did not work; instead it drained the USA’s resources and got in the way of decisive victories in Cuba and Vietnam. Reagan did not seek to contain communism, by contrast.

Omitting the bit about “ask(ing) what you can do for your country” ignores the collectivist overtones.

Wherever he may fall on anyone’s analysis, his love of this country would NEVER be in question.

The spending increase had to do with going up against the USSR—not expanding the welfare state, which is how the left took it post-1989. Spending always goes up during wars, no matter the “temperature”.

All 3 items I listed can be easily checked on Google.

You can also search Google to confirm that the Earth is flat, we never landed on the Moon and Elvis is still alive.

Government spending during 8 years of Reagan did indeed triple. It can be checked easily on various web sites.

Revenues grew at nearly the same rate as the result of a very robust economy. Debt as a percentage of GDP was at a manageable level.

Reagan gave instant amnesty to all illegals. It is well documented.

First of all, amnesty was only granted to SOME illegals.

Secondly, he signed a bipartisan bill that would have likely overcome a veto. He DID NOT issue an executive order as some would have you believe.

Finally, it's not Reagan's fault that Simpson-Mazzoli's safeguards were later ignored.

Just calling me names without providing links is not very helpful.

The bulk of what you are saying is complete BS, links are needed to establish this.
