INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -
A high-speed police chase wound through Independence and Kansas City, and the suspect driver hit at least one innocent motorist before he ditched the car and hid underneath a mattress.
Police were then able to arrest the man.
Independence police began to pursue the vehicle about 3:30 p.m. Monday. The light-colored Cadillac was reported stolen in the northwest part of Independence.
The driver weaved dangerously through traffic at high-speed on a crowded I-70.
Independence police were joined by Kansas City officers. The man drove from Independence into Kansas City where he hit an innocent motorist driving a gold car near 31st Street and Jackson Avenue. The man even drove recklessly on Interstate 70 at one point.
After ditching the vehicle about 3:45 p.m. Monday, the man ran behind some houses before hiding underneath a mattress as a police helicopter and Chopper5 were overhead. Police eventually found the man about 3:50 and pulled him from underneath the mattress. Police said Michael Smith, 42, was arrested near Highway 40 and 47th Street in Independence.
Police stopped the pursuit at one point but Chopper5 and a police helicopter remained overhead.
A passenger in the gold car said there were no police pursuing the car when Smith allegedly ran a red light and hit him. The gold car had the green light while traveling west on 31st Street while the stolen vehicle was traveling south on Jackson.
No one was injured in the gold car and it was drivable following the crash.
