WASHINGTON Last April, a dozen New York-based Internet companies gathered in the Flatiron Building boardroom of the social media website Tumblr to hear dire warnings that broadband providers were about to get the right to charge for the fastest speeds on the web.
The implication: If they didnt pay up, they would be stuck in the slow lane.
What followed has been the longest, most sustained campaign of Internet activism in history, one that the little guys appear to have won. On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission is expected to vote to regulate the Internet as a public good. On Tuesday, Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota and chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, all but surrendered on efforts to overturn the coming ruling, conceding Democrats are lining up with President Obama in favor of the F.C.C.

Powerless. We won and we still lose? Romney/McCain 2016!
“How much more are we going to take?”
Given 150 plus years of uniparty history, it would seem pretty much anything they dish out. Conservatives are already the battered wives of American politics.
But this time will be different, right?
“We have no representation in congress. None at all. If a third party doesnt pop up soon theres no hope.”
Sure there’s hope. There just isn’t any in electoral politics. Putting hope in these clowns is sort of like expecting an unscripted match in professional wrestling.
We need a second party, first.
“You forgot to add: Victorious Democrats reclaim Senate. Republicans maintain control of House by the slimmest of margins.”
And why should anyone care? The rhetoric is different of course, but the policies of the ‘rat wing of the uniparty are not significantly different than those of the gop wing.
“Whats this? Three major losses for the GoP in a single day. Whos plotting strategy here?”
The same folks who have been plotting it for 150 plus years: our beloved uniparty. You didn’t really expect the new gop faction to do anything conservative did you?
Do you understand “Straw Man” argument that serves the purpose of the very people pushing the regulation. If you don’t understand that large players like ATT, Comcast and many others solidify their position and lock out competition. What part of a “free market” is this. That is to say— Socialism and govt. regs are perfect for the big boys, just like taxation and selective targeted “laws”. If you think this is good government, you have no business on FREE Republic. This is a Republic. Not a God-damned oligarcy. Unless of course your idea of conservative is the company a@@hole at the country club clubhouse who lives off our tax money teat. Differentiate this OBAMAUMAO driven FCC regulation from ANY kind of yet again crony capitalism, just like Solyndra. Comcast kicks back Democrat donations, just like Buffett (for more than 3 decades). The mack daddy in the White Hut is lining his (and any other dem’s) pockets, for their pals in... media. To control us.
How do you derive from this, that I “sound” like a socialist, since it is the socialists who are driving this entire issue. Hillary’s dream— control the internet, control the content. Put FR out of business. That is a FACT. Deo Vindice (look it up).
Another big govt. FReeper. Consult our Constitution.
Late to the party. Troll much?
oligarcy=oligarchy
So, after this abomination clears— where will the “black market” be accessed? The Dark net? Should we go back to leaflets and samizdat book publishing for the little bastards who don’t read?
FUJB!! Just Damn you assholes into HELL!
“...My race is Scot_Irish_American....”
I’d say you’re a “Native born American of Scots-Irish ancestry”.
But that’s just me... :^)
I am opposed to net neutrality. I had the impression you were in favor of it. If you are in favor of net neutrality then I stand by my assertion that you sound like a socialist.
Even if you are in favor Net Neutrality, you can bet your sweet bippy that ain’t what you’re going to get from the government, even if they dress it up and call it that.
I guess this might be true if the definition of little guys is BIG government.
As far as who belongs on Freerepublic...you should stop taking the Lord’s name in vain.
Cut the regulations is what I say. Net neutrality is a regulation so it is bad. Anything preexisting regulation that acts to protect Comcast should also be eliminated. Comcast should be able to charge whatever it wants to charge.
No one really wants free speech. Both parties are bothered by it.
Funny thing is China has the Great E Wall, which everyone from China seems to know how to get around.
