This is an extraordinary piece, as it represents one of the first, if not the first, mainstream media acknowledgment that what I have been saying all these years, and illustrated in detail in thirteen books, hundreds of articles, and tens of thousands of posts here, has been absolutely correct: that jihadis use the texts and teachings to justify their actions and make recruits, and make a case that obviously convinces many young Muslims, that they represent the truest and most authentic expression of Islam.

We’ll need to get acquainted with the Islamic State’s intellectual genealogy if we are to react in a way that will not strengthen it, but instead help it self-immolate in its own excessive zeal…."

Obama refuses to call it Islamic extremism/terrorism but does anybody doubt for one single solitary second that if a group that called itself “The Christian state” was going around doing the same thing he would take the same stand? A guy I work with tossed out something the other day that made me think. He said that the militant islamists are the baseline of islam. The peaceful mulsims are actually the radicals because they are choosing peace rather than militant domination as prescribed by islam.

I am not sure if that is accurate, at least it is not evident in actions to date. I believe there is a lot of deception at play and it is also coupled with tribal interests - not necessarily national interests. The Arab and Persian world is not secular enough to ignore the tribal interests of its leaders. (e.g., determine the tribe a nation's leader comes, and then look at long standing disputes between other tribes.) Additionally, while nation states exists, there are often states within nation states based on tribes that are not completely controlled by nation states. This is much more granular than the Kurds for example. The bottom line is that we cannot compare and treat Muslims, their nations and their interests in the same way as we do western states.

Count yourself fortunate. You work with a smart guy. The problem is when Christians of all persuasions cast off violence as a method they can do so on the basis of the foundational teachings of Christ. The compass for the Muslims points them in the opposite direction. So the deeper they go into the foundations of their religion and the more fervent they become the louder and more clearly the call to murder will be heard.
