Oklahoma legislative committee questions legality of Advanced Placement courses in public schools

Some opponents of Common Core apparently have now turned their guns on Advanced Placement courses.

The legality of teaching Advanced Placement courses in Oklahoma public schools was raised Monday during a House Common Education Committee hearing on a bill aimed at the AP U.S. history guidelines.

That measure, House Bill 1380, by Rep. Dan Fisher, R-Yukon, would direct the state Board of Education to review those guidelines and bar the use of state funds for AP U.S. history courses.

During discussion and debate, however, it was suggested that AP courses are similar to Common Core, in that they could be construed as an attempt to impose a national curriculum on American schools.

It was also suggested that AP courses violate the legislation approved last year that repealed Common Core, with state Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, saying she has asked the state Attorney General’s Office for a ruling on the matter.

That legislation gives sole control of curriculum and assessment to the state, although it was not immediately clear whether the requirement applies to all courses or only to required courses.

Although HB 1380 specifically targets U.S. history, a ruling that it violates state law related to curriculum and assessment could apply to all AP courses.

Advanced Placement is a nationally recognized series of courses and tests developed by the College Board, a private entity, with the assistance of high school and college faculty, that allows high school students to earn college credit. It is not required for high school graduation, and public schools do not have to offer it.

I don’t know anything about AP History. But I am very familiar with AP Physics and AP Chemistry. Those last two programs are focused and challenging, the real deal.

Taxpayer money should not be b used to fund AP classes. I already paid for my kids’ college education; I shouldn’t have to pay for yours, also.

I took AP U.S.History in 1971. It was substantially non political. My understanding is that has changed. Now it it leftist, revisionist, PC History.

Public schools are a scourge on America!

” AP Physics and AP Chemistry. “

Hard to F up these courses. They are based on factual data.

See post 5 though.

Possibly that is why Obomination feels so threatened about schools having AP History, that this course is both focused and challenging...and truthful, which the man cannot stand truth. The young minds of this country must not know what actually did happen and hyper-accurate accounts of such involving U.S. and world history, because then they might not...be doomed to repeat it.

I had AP History in 1966. Very tough, definitely at the college level.

” Taxpayer money should not be b used to fund AP classes.”

You should rethink this. Aside from leftist AP English and History, AP is the only thing that prepares our kids for college. Regular college prep courses are so watered down, they are not worth much.

The AP math book isn't significantly different in price than the remedial math book, and the teachers for both classes ride the same seniority based pay scales.

You aren't paying extra for AP.

Aruh? As a former AP student, I think they may be off the rails with this one.

AP US History has become a purely cultural Marxist exercise in deconstruction.

The exam (which you have to get a 4 or 5 on to claim the credit) is like a Chinese Cultural Revolution exercise in self-criticism. If your kid is uncomfortable denouncing his own people and his own country, he should stay away.

” You aren’t paying extra for AP. “

Correct. What you DO get with AP is a much more demanding course of study.

Jim, you have just confirmed what a good friend told me about what his son had for content in his AP History course.

The Marxists have apparently done the same with AP English.

AP courses are a rip off because too many students don’t get the proper instruction to pass the test after paying the $$. Better to take dual credit classes so you get actual college credit.

About 5 years ago, only about 40% passed the test. Not worth stressing your kid out for it.

They had a big conflict over the AP history course last Oct in Colorado.

The conservatives took over the school board and decided they wouldn't use AP because it wasn't patriotic and would hire someone to write the curriculum.

The students went out on strike complaining they wanted to get advanced placement.

I'm not sure what came of that.
