AMHERST, Mass. — The University of Massachusetts at Amherst has banned Iranian nationals from admission to certain graduate programs in a move that school officials say aligns its policy with U.S. sanctions against Iran.
The university will no longer admit students from Iran to some programs in engineering and natural sciences.

Interesting and appropriate policy from a liberal campus. Somewhat unexpected. Wonder who initiated the policy and why?
Question: How are these “students” from Iran gaining access to college campuses in the territory once known as “the United States of America”?
Is there a back door to obtaining visas to come to this territory that does not involve going through an embassy? I had thought the US no longer maintained an embassy in Iran.
Maybe with open borders visas are no longer necessary. Wish I could visit a country like that, but there is only one, and I am already there.

Yeah, I was thinking that. You don’t need a visa to go to college, or even get in-state tuition nowadays!
Latin Americans are not the only ones who are going to take advantage of that.

It would appear that there is a federal law on the books to prevent Iranians from having access to such training and knowledge. Still this administration does not enforce laws it doesn’t like. Could be Kerry got ticked at some Iranian who’s kid is at UMASS.
But UMass has a new Masters Program in the Manufacture and Deployment of IEDs and Suicide Belts.
Well, it’s about time. Good policy from one university out of many so far.

I was in engineering school in the early 80’s. Many Iranians in attendance even though the Iranian Hostage crisis was still fresh in our memories.
In one class, a fellow in front of me dropped his books and out came a picture of the Ayotolla Khomeni (sp?). He quickly picked it up.
A year or so later, I’m a TA for a large class. Several students (Iranian) are obviously cheating during a test and I bring it to the attention of the professor. He thanks me but ignores the cheating.
does umass have engineering degrees?
Follow the money: The only reason I can imagine that uber liberal UMass would do such a thing is that there is a funding source that hinges on it. Maybe some defense department contracts are at risk because of the presence of Iranians in the engineering department, or something like that.
