I could agree with you a lot more if those regions were as solidly pro-Russia as some folks make them out to be.
There simply too much opposition to back up the popular belief system along these lines.

Russkies are a minority even in the East. In Donetsk Oblas they represent 38 percent of the population, and even only a small minority of that 38 percent support separatism according to international polls. During the actual election, the East, except for those portions where Putin wouldn't let them vote, went to president Poroshenko.
The Kremlin wants us to believe that there is a popular uprising from the government, but can't prove it, and even the "separatist leaders" (all from Russia!) complain that they can't get enough local people to pick up a gun.

They are that way, look at the 2005 and 2010 election results map of Ukraine. And btw, all this shooting and destruction could have been avoided. The regular election would be happening now.
