Five Characters in Search of a Reason for New Orleans's Smoking Ban

New Orleans’s city council has unanimously approved a city-wide smoking ban in all bars and casinos, making it the latest big city to pass such a smoking ban without the courtesy of a popular vote.

The ban itself, like the others that came in cities before it, is purported to promote the public welfare. Non-smokers, government officials argue, have the right to have their lungs be unafflicted by dangerous secondhand smoke if they choose to visit or work in any establishment. In the case of New Orleans, teary-eyed city councilman James Gray II read aloud the names of people he knew who died of lung cancer, which “convinced” lawmakers to approve the smoking ban.

Like there needed to be another reason to NOT visit N'awlins. They got po' boys and mufalatas outside Orleans Parrish. They also got Mardi Gras parades outside Orleans Parrish. Certainly some smokers and non smokers will have their say on this. Then again, the choclate city's council has spoken and you WILL comply. Shootings at parades, meh. Smoking while waiting for the drive up ATM in your car, you in BIG trouble.

I dont smoke and have long since stricken NO off my list after the unprofessional, bullying police tactics we encountered at the 2007 Sugar Bowl, Georgia vs Hawaii. I will never spend another second or penny there.

Missed one thing.

They changed the law to only fine businesses and doesn’t allow for fining individuals because... wait for it... minorities may be disproportionately affected.

Chicago, LA NYC are North Korea next to New Orleans. New Orleans treat adults as adults. They don’t write you a $150.00 ticket for every damn little thing.

Yeah, but it’s probably less stressful on the NOPD to arrest smokers than shooters. :>}

Not denying the effects of second hand smoke, but smokers are mostly harming themselves while boozers are a danger to themselves and everybody else.

Isn’t it funny that most of us grew up going to bars, dances, etc where the smoke was so thick we could hardly see and we never gave it a second thought- now everybody’s suddenly ‘allergic’ and/or smoking is a filthy habit and smoke/smokers stink?

Drunks are responsible for more death, destruction and misery than smokers ever will be. Ban liquor.

Are they afraid Obama will visit? They need never fear, there are better golf courses, without alligators, where the crooked politicians have more money.

I do some jam sessions locally and neither my wife or I drink alcohol and are still amazed at just how some people get when they drink. And we know a lot of them don’t take cabs home. And, a lot of them are put off by a couple of the venues due to smoking being allowed but have no problem with those that get totally blitzed. Booze good, weed good, tobacco BAD juju.

According to the new rules and regs, if you are waiting in line for the drive up ATM, no. Unless they changed it since the article first showed up. Some of that evil smoke might drift in to the car in front of you or behind you. Drive in daquiris(sp) no problem getting those. Just as long as you promise you won’t put the straw in while you’re driving. I didn’t see if you can smoke waiting in the drive through for your daquiris. Orleans Parrish ordinance only.

I doubt many people will head to bars in Westwego so they can smoke.

I do not doubt at all that many Texans who want to smoke and gamble will stop short on their drive for weekend getaways — in Lake Charles.
