A lead wadcutter, round nose, or a plated flat nose, etc. bullet would penetrate considerably more than an expanding hollow point. But maybe not through blue balloons. I’ll say 7.

Salt or fresh water, density makes a difference.

I used to get 3-4 one gallon water jugs, depending on the bullet. The 180 JHPs would explode and only barely enter the 2nd jug. I was thinking it was a cast Keith bullet at 250 gr.

In the 44 mag, the 265 gr jacketed flat points made for the 444 Marlin did not expand and penetrated many water jugs if it did not veer off. Probably would not penetrate blue jugs though!

Usually when given problems of this nature, the answer is either (1) 0 or (2) 1. What the heck, I’ll go with one.

Many lower powered rounds would probably go through a lot more and maybe even all 10, like a 32ACP fmj round or the like. A slower round that doesn’t expand.

Well, if we are talking zombies, I figure holing up is a bad plan, because even if your spot is impenetrable to them, you will run out of food and water eventually, and then you have to go outside.

My plan is to commandeer a seaworthy boat and head for the Caribbean. I could either head down the Mississippi or east thru the Saint Lawrence to get to the ocean. Then, I’ve just got to find an uninhabited island and I’m good. Zombies can’t swim, and if they try walking underwater, the pressure in the ocean bottom would crush them.

As long as the island is decent sized, say 50 acres, it should have some groundwater, plus I can catch rainwater. The fishing is good year round, and there are plenty of lobsters and shellfish to trap. Plus, most islands like that will have some fruit or nut trees, since the natives plant those on uninhabited islands, because they don’t need much tending, just the occasional visit at harvest time.

I think the expansion of the round is only part of the problem. The water itself is incompressible, so the bullet has to waste a lot of force pushing it out of the way and loses kinetic energy quickly. A pointed rifle round probably would lose energy slower, just due to the aero... i mean hydrodynamic shape.
