IN a society where almost every cultural phenomenon ends up interpreted through an ideological lens, the success de scandale of Fifty Shades of Grey the books, the movie, the branded cuffs and whips has left culture warriors a little bit confused. Is this another transgressive breakthrough the latest blow to whatever remains of traditional morality, the mainstreaming of a lifestyle long locked away from view? Or is the now-famous story, with its alpha male gazillionaire and his punished female prize, actually a reactionary fairy tale, encouraging submission to the latest version of the patriarchy?
The answer, of course, is a little of both, which is also the secret to the books success: In their not-exactly-literary pages, the central tension of the sexual revolution is finessed, tamed and happily resolved.

Women fantasize about rich men putting them in their place - in exchange of course for a decadent lifestyle.
Yes, there is that element to it, of decadence and perversion, that is becoming so common in our culture.
However, I think I detect another undercurrent. Think about it, who are the fans of this movie? Not men, and not women in general. Younger women have no interest in it. It is older, middle-aged leftist, feminist women who seem thrilled with this premise. I think that is significant.
They are not just thrilled because the book is filled with sex, or even with kinky sex, or because the sex is with a hunky young rich guy. If that were the key, any number of other books or movies that fit that bill should have become a sensation. So what is different about this one? In this one, the protagonist is an emotionally distant, dominating man who objectifies women. In other words, exactly the type of man that middle-aged feminists have pilloried for decades to the point where they are a rarity, and those who are still around avoid these feminist hags like the plague.
So this tells me that these ladies are seriously dissatisfied with the type of men that they are left with, and secretly yearn for the type of “neanderthals” that they drove off. They’ll never admit that openly, because of their pride, but I think this phenomenon betrays their secret.
Only in books by women do men like this “fall in love” with one of their timid little sexual toys. Makes me think of Rosemary Rogers’ THE INSIDERS, from the 1970s.
Beginning to think I’m the only female not remotely interested in the books or film. I do find it interesting that it seems a preponderance of leftist females who decry the need for men who are flocking in droves to see it.
Alas, Brave New Babylon.
He’s a billionaire. A college student snags him by giving him what he wants and she shares his wealrh. We have college girls looking for their sugar daddy. Even when he beats her. A sick fantasy. The entire entertainment industry is telling the public, this is the book to read, the movie to see. Not my thing.
If you read all 3 of the books - as a friend of mine did - you’ll see this is nothing more than the standard soap opera tale of the woman “changing” her lover, and in the end they “live happily ever after” - in the style of a Bill Gates (gag) or Warren Buffett.
One of the great paradoxes of modern times. The leftist female in general and the feminist in particular want men they can dominate but when they ‘have’ one, they find something missing, that something being a MAN. Lesbians share the same unhappiness. I think these domination fantasies develop to compensate for the disruption they have created in their beings as opposed to embracing, for want of a better phrase, a lifestyle more as nature intended.
However, I think I detect another undercurrent. Think about it, who are the fans of this movie? Not men, and not women in general. Younger women have no interest in it. It is older, middle-aged leftist, feminist women who seem thrilled with this premise. I think that is significant.
no no no! Leftist feminists hate this movie. They hate the man is powerful and the woman is not slutty or the alpha in the relationship.
NO...you are NOT the only woman not remotely interested....but, I think the press wants us to thing that.
Interesting take. Now that feminists have turned men into vadges they want their penises back!!
My Facebook post on this subject:
What better way to confirm the degradation of our Nation and its Lack of its Morals. If anyone had a question about how Dark our Souls have become let them know this is a RED Light Warning. If this is what everyone wants we are truly in those days of which Good is Called Wrong and Wrong is call Right! Welcome to the Darkness.
For those who Understand the Times we Live in Pray for our Neighbors for their Souls are truly in darkness which they cannot find themselves out of!
God Bless!
Is this just what they ought to do, or what you actually see?
I’ve actually seen feminists post such on various forums. These women like beta men and powerful slutty women who dominate in the relationship.
Bingo. There is nothing new under the sun. This one happens to be seasoned with the sexual humiliation of women that has been fueled by the internet.
Circling the drain, we are.
“Leftist feminists hate this movie.”
Perhaps the full-time social justice warrior feminists, but they are the younger crowd. The old school, 60s and 70s era feminist brigades are the ones flocking to the theaters.
Oh I know I’m now. A lot of acquaintances are talking about it. I simply don’t understand the female fascination or the hype. Now if I should marry again and Mr. amazing and I want to get our freak on, no ones business but our own. We are bottoming out on the slippery slope.
