(Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama asked Congress on Wednesday to authorize military force against Islamic State that would bar any large-scale invasion by U.S. ground troops and limit operations to three years.
Republicans, who control Congress, put up swift resistance to the proposal. They say Obama's foreign policy is too passive and want stronger measures against the militants, also known as ISIL.
With Obama's fellow Democrats wary of another Middle East war, it could be difficult for the White House to win enough support to pass the bill, even though six months have passed since the military campaign began.
Some lawmakers predicted a vote as soon as March but others anticipated debate could last for months.
The proposed resolution says Islamic State "has committed despicable acts of violence and mass execution." Its militants have killed thousands of civilians while seizing territory in Iraq and Syria in an attempt to establish a hub of jihadism in the heart of the Arab world.
They have also generated international outrage by beheading several western journalists and aid workers and burning to death a Jordanian pilot.
Obama sent his request to Congress a day after his administration confirmed the death of Kayla Mueller, a 26-year-old aid worker who was the last known American hostage held by the group.

Pass a Resolution requiring a ground invasion or nothing.
I suspect the only reason he’s asking is b/c he thinks the answer will be no or a protracted debate will ensue. Basically, its just another way for him to vote ‘present’. If Congress gives him the green light I wouldn’t think he’d move quickly to do anything other than study or ask for endless amounts of intel.

After watching this presentation, if you STILL believe that Bush was correct when he called islam a “religion of peace” (it’s not a religion and it ain’t peaceful) and Obama was right when he recently declared islam morally equivalent or superior to the Christian Crusades, you are DEFINITELY a BIG part of the problem.

Being IS is not an actual country/nation, isn’t 0bama according them this status by default with this request? Has there ever been another situation akin to this where the War Powers Authority was requested for action against a non nation/state?

This is the year.
Here is the thing about all this (and another poster was right, this is about going after Assad). When viewing ISIS/ISIL we in the west have been viewing it country by country over there. ISIS does not recognize those countries, only the caliphate which is a far different border drawing. To ISIS, the "new" (really that should be "old caliphate" lines) lines they recognize has their enemy all over the place in many countries we still recognize as sovereign. So, to say "identity" the enemy means first he will identify the ISIS drawn caliphate border lines. In the end, obama will be helping ISIS again and I doubt the majority in DC are even capable of understanding what they are even agreeing to talk about (not even vote on, just talk and politic). obama and his string master valerie jarrett are doing an end run around our government and alliances in plain site.

Obama has ulterior motives in wanting this passed...I sincerely hope our guys are going to look closely at what “authority” this actually gives Obama....he does nothing without standing to gain ‘someething else’ he can get no other way. They better be absolutely sure to examine every dot on this.
Once assad is taken out obama will recall our units; how, I don't know, but he will find a way (maybe capitulating to Russia, being the peaceful guy he is and "de-escalating" things"). Iran goes full tilt after that against The Sauds. Russian oil goes through the roof on exports, here in the U.S. we suffer a crippling energy blow as we stabilize and are (finally) forced to use our own means of producing energy and are not messing with OPEC. (Venezuela would love for things to play out that way as well,they are in the hurt locker over oil prices)
I’m not sure I see the US interest in this. But clearly we favor the elimination of ISIS.
Protect our allies (Israel, Jordan, Kuwait)?
Oil? (we can pump almost enough on our own now)
Eliminate terrorist training? (doesn’t make any sense until the border is secured)
I’d say provide military aid to Israel and maybe Jordan, at most.
I understand this will permit Obama to go into any area where “terrorists” are......could he use this to go into Ukraine? or Syria? Or any other nation he wants to manipulate outcomes?
He’s looking for someone to blame when it hits the fan.
He thinks that if this war effort goes bad, he can save his ‘legacy’ by throwing everyone who votes for his phony bill under the bus, and stand there showing everyone how clean his hands are.
He knows (or at least ValJar knows) that the world is waiting for America to take a stand and take the lead. This is the only way he thinks he can escape responsibility for any ‘unpleasantness’ and still take credit for any successes.
Actually, Obama asked for permission to declare non-war. He’s wants authorization to not send troops or equipment to fight ISIS, if I heard him correctly. He acts psychotic.
