This video sequence filmed on 27 January 2015 offshore California near San Nicolas Island shows a Tomahawk Block IV missile launched from USS Kidd (DDG 100) and then followed by an F/A-18 until it eventually plows through a stack of containers stacked atop a moving ship.
This is the first time a Tomahawk missile has been used to hit a moving maritime target, according to the U.S. Navy.

Baffled by the “They survived” tag. Who cares?!?!
Dang, those birds saw that thing coming, eh?
In actual combat a missile hit low on the hull, at the waterline if possible, would be more lethal.
That’s a pretty big gun to go bird hunting.
Actually I have my doubts about their survival. Something that large moving that fast is going to produce a fair amount of concussive force.
Did this comply with NEPA, was this discussed as a possible environmental impact?
Plus he has to be able to land on a carrier.

Evidently not - in the slo-mo it didn’t even displace their primaries. Not one feather lost.
Good thing for the birds that it was an inert test missile.
They didn’t want a hole in the ship. Just testing it’s ability to hit a moving target.
There’s a Subaru commercial showing various wrecked Subarus on tow trucks and the tow driver tells the junkyard guy, “They survived.” It’s just a joke, Benito.
I can’t wait for the video of the F/A-18 following the projectile from a railgun!
Considering the velocity of the approaching missle, those pigeons reacted quickly!
Yes. The ship in question is a small dedicated training vessel that a stack of containers can be placed on to simulate various scenarios. Not something the Navy wants to blow up.
I’ve never seen it used as a target for munitions before. Have seen pictures and video of SEALs using it to conduct opposed boarding scenarios.
Obama gave orders that no jihadi pidgeons can be injured.
Probably heard the F-18 and possibly the Tomahawk. Both were subsonic. However, the lighter pigeon had one eye facing the incoming aircraft. The darker pigeon was facing directly away from the incoming but jumped after the lighter had made one wing beat.
Good reflexes!
