Much of the current mess can be laid to rest on the leaders of the main Repblics at Belovezhskaya Pushcha who unilaterally dissolved the Soviet Union.
They whipped up nationalism to accrue power for themselves. When the “big country” disintegrated, it was a miracle it didn’t result in widespread bloodshed.
For that hasty decision, the peoples of the former Soviet Union are still paying the price today.

Ukraine could be partitioned between Poland and Russia. Much of what is now western Ukraine used to be part of Poland before the Hitler-Stalin pact.
Undoing it would restore stability in Europe.
Germany is a key for Putin.
The Kaliningrad oblast is a huge resource drain. Poland needs a payoff if East Prussia is to be revived.

Makes as much sense as some dip-stick in the Ukraine stating that he speaks for the nation, or even part of it.
