If the underlying principle is that society gets to tell you what is best for you and mandate your behavior based on that, then the power has been ceded to the State. Some will argue for this, some will argue for that. Given the right circumstances and ulterior interests and motive, and boom, it becomes a law.
In other words, when you say “But THAT stuff is really bad, so we need a law”, then you are doing exactly what is described above. Ceding power to the State. And sooner or later someone bill com along and say “THIS stuff is really bad too, so we need another law”. And on and on.
It’s like the old joke: We already know what we are, now we’re just haggling over the details.
