An anti-gun coworker sent me the below link with the caption "I still have not seen any study that shows more guns make our communities safer."
http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/medical_examiner/2015/01/good_guy_with_a_gun_myth_guns_increase_the_risk_of_homicide_accidents_suicide.html?wpsrc=fol_fb
Can anyone help me with something to refute his argument?
The study is asinine in that it does not differentiate WHO is being shot as a result of the presence of firearms. Of course there are more shootings in the presence of firearms; shooting is the purpose for which people have guns.
Traffic fatalities are lower in countries without cars, too.
That such a discrepancy does not jump out at your co-worker is indicative of “confirmation bias” rather than a reasoned inquiry into the public utility of firearms.
Either salon or slate is published from inside a mental institution. Maybe ur friend knows which one it is.
I was reading the link you posted in #6, and noticed that a government review board mentioned in the article stated that the author’s dataset was “too big”, and they summarily stated that they “saw” no such statistical link. In otherwords, when lefties are confronted with hard statistical evidence contrary to their beliefs, they simply dismiss it outright.
It’s true - merely `owning’ a gun may not make you safer.
Now - earning your CWP through a gun safety & handling course which includes live firing with the defensive gun of your choice, and regular range practice afterward using combat firing techniques AND practicing situational awareness at all times with your weapon always within reach,
THAT will make you safer.
Their neighbors will take care of it.
Unfortunately he’s wrong about Detroit gun laws and anybody with a computer can look it up.
Detroit has the same gun laws as everywhere else in Michigan because the state has supremacy over the cities. That means concealed carry with a permit, open carry without a permit, and stand your ground laws pretty much identical to Florida.
Detroit has the highest justifiable homicide rate in the country. They are defensive shootings that are unfortunately counted as murder by the FBI even though they are justified. The actual murder rate in Detroit is down for the second year in a row since the arrival of police chief Craig who encourages people to arm themselves and defend themselves.
bkmk
Any stat that would supposedly measure “more guns make our communities safer,” or “guns increase the risk of homicide accidents and suicide” are so unreliably vague as to be worthless.
The Bill Whittle video lays it out in simple math. If you’re like me, you read faster than you view audio/visual. Read the transcript instead:

More Guns, Less Crime is the Bible in the gun world.
My first question would be “IF I can prove it to you, will you change your mind?”
Unless you get some sort of affirmation, you’re wasting your time, which I’m guessing is his objective to begin with.
I knew you would know the underlying truth... Thanks for sharing.
People throw Detroit’s “strict gun laws” out there as a matter of fact but its an absolute falsehood. You can’t open carry in Texas yet but you can open carry in downtown Detroit.
The crime rate in Detroit is falling. It is still extraordinarily high but the murder capital is actually Flint (which has the same gun laws). The high murder rate in Detroit and every other city has other more “socially sensitive” causes.
The only way to win is making sure we have the facts on our side 100% of the time.
