“We can’t do that, Dave”
Sounds good to me, what is the hold-up?
Okay, let us launch a ragtag fleet of ships to other star systems!
If the “threat” we are talking about is Global Warming then yes, space travel will solve it.
Only if there is not God and He does not love humanity would we have to attempt to look elsewhere to ensure the human race does not die out. But so many people who advance space travel for this very existential reason think that in doing so humanity can somehow escape the inherent failures of humanity.
If we could travel to other habitable planets, those new societies would soon be beset by the very problems humans have on this one.
Happily, there is a Creator God and He has a plan for humans to transcend their failures. However, the step that is in the immediate future is not so pleasant. It involves allowing humanity to fully experience the fruits of following the god of this world. See Revelation 12:12.
Right, just as soon as captain Spock goes back in time thru a black hole and gives the young Scotty his future formula for a inter-planetary transporter. Then we wont need rocket engines or fuel anymore. We can just travel there in seconds.
“We only lack the will to do it...”
AHHH, the collectivize ‘we’, we selfish taxpayers.
“We might just as easily find a way to escape into the past, rather than deep space.”
Interplanetary space in our own Solar System is deep space, and we are already using many unmanned spacecraft to explore deep space. The establishment of a manned station on an asteroid is not much more difficult than sending humans to the International Space Station (ISS). Over time humans would begin to make permanent habitats in the asteroids, and some of those asteroids were serve as routine transports to the outer Solar System along eccentric Solar orbits. As more and more human habitats become established among the asteroids, industries and economies would come into existence that drastically reduce the economic costs of production and transportation of goods and service required by those communities.

A ring system 200 times bigger than Saturns??
Who wouldn’t buy a ticket to see that??
You mean in a movie? A movie ticket?
But that was a lot of what was available then. I’m with you on that, some of them were just terrible.
does humanity need saving? no......
“Will interstellar space travel save humanity?”
Sure. Why not.
A ticket for the cruise ship to that solar system. lol
I read a very good non-fiction book on this topic that I cannot remember the name of and would love to read again. Within the last 15 years or so. Any help would be appreciated.
It wasn’t all that long ago on this forum that a number of people were screaming for the de-funding of NASA and saying that nothing good ever came from it. I am not a big fan of NASA and frankly think it should have never been created but that is history. We should have continued with exploration and built a colony or base on the moon... but short sighted government and the whinging few stopped that. Now we have lost the ability to build the rocket motors that powered the Saturn 5 rockets to the moon and back and that is the real sad part.... had we, the United States, continued to lead the way into space we might have already settled colonies on the moon and have stations out in space.
But what will we EVER do without our telephone sanitizers?
Will leprechauns and unicorns save humanity? Scientists predict mystical creatures in middle Earth will have to a become a reality - and say pixie dust and magic could be the answer. The vast distances between enchanted forests combined with the Giant and Orc limit puts severe constraints on the realities of flying wizards. This could be overcome using some form of Magick or Seeing Crystals. Another world would likely have an enchantment that is unbreakable. Building vast castles is an option, but this would be challenging and expensive. Sword-wielding elven armies would be a more sensible option.
Shoot, might as well have written it my way.
Save us from what, exactly?
We’ve already been saved, we’re just waiting for the max number of people to accept the invitation.
Um, not likely. The zero point field is everywhere, and it is energy dense. Tapping into the field is the unlimited energy supply for interstellar travel. BTW, Physicists are already working on isolating a craft and contents from the source of inertia and thus gravity. See Haisch and Rueda, et al
