Snow and powerful winds swept into the Northeast on Monday as a storm predicted to grow into a major blizzard prompted mass transit shutdowns, highway closures, thousands of airline flight cancellations and a ban on driving in New York City and on major roads across the region.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the closure of New York Citys subway and bus system as of 11 p.m. Monday, the first such closure since Superstorm Sandy hit the region in the fall of 2012.
With the closure of all mass transit, and the citywide driving ban as of 11 p.m., Cuomos declaration meant the nations largest city would be brought to a complete standstill except for people willing to venture out into the blowing snow.
Cuomos announcement came amid concerns that winds associated with the storm would gust as high as 70 mph.

Obama to ask Congress for $42,000 Gazillion dollars to roll back the man-caused climate disruption that causes this white death to fall upon the citizens of blue states.
OMG, OMg, Omg :-) The guy on CNN is leaning into the wind in Asbury Park, N.J....while a couple folks walked up behind walking their Dog.
Hilarious.
Good grief! If a blizzard is coming, I don't need government to help me prepare. I don't need government to tell me to stay home. Liberals like DeBlasio have created this dependence, then they wonder why people can't fend for themselves.
I am 90 miles northeast of NYC and there is snow in the road! And no plows.
Cannot leave the house for 24 hours. Or I’d be shot by the gestapo.
PS Even PBS NEwshour was impressed with Walker and CRuz in Iowa.
Word is you can get loosies off Brooklyn St...
He stole that move from Shep Smith!
They just burn money - it's cheaper.
Algore said by now, snow would be a thing of the past that we would be telling our children about.
Well, back before the world-wide flood, I think it’s fair to say there was no snow (and actually no rain, either). SO ... it has been that way before, and could very well be that way again, some time in the future. However, I think Al Gore’s timetable is off ... :-) ...
I must say, though, that at the coming of the Messiah of Israel, in setting up his one-world government over all the nations of the world, that this could be that time of no snow. There are very dramatic climatic changes that happen then, and snow is no longer in the picture from what I can see. And I would say that the Messiah of Israel is coming back fairly soon, to set up his one-world government ... therefore it might not be that far away!
Bush’s fault!
A city filled with helpless libs is helpless. Fancy that.
I don’t think NYC would have shut down because of snow 1941-1945.
Only two of those New York storms dropped more snow than the record set in South Carolina Feb. 9/ 1973 and there was less than a two inch difference. All the rest were well below the South Carolina record. Eight people froze to death in SC in that storm.
Burning a plastic card doesn’t produce much heat.
Heard if you’re on the roads and they catch you it’s a $300. fine...on the news a bit ago.
I will read the comments, however, it must be the wind factor, 3 feet is a lot of snow but can be cleared without much trouble.
Now, this was a deep snow, purportedly from Indiana/Ohio in 1978. http://www.pic2fly.com/Mansfield+Ohio+Blizzard+Of+1978.html I guess the picture is real, it probably did not fall all at once.
This may have been a fizzle in NYC.
That is true. It fell over two days/and a half. I was a cop at the time and we had volunteer 4WD owners who ferried us all over town to answer emergency calls (when people get stranded with each other in such circumstances, many get vicious.). I remember running over an abandoned car on a street. We thought it was a drift.
