Republicans on Capitol Hill this week suffered an embarrassing defeat after being forced to drop legislation that would have outlawed abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. But similar legislation is likely to advance in state capitols around the country this year.
Abortion opponents like the Susan B. Anthony List and Americans United for Life call the 20-week ban, dubbed the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in many states, their top priority in legislative sessions getting underway this month.
The five month late term abortion limit is an important part of our premier legislative project, said Ovide Lamontagne, general counsel at Americans United for Life. Protecting a women from the health risks associated with a late term abortion as well protecting the interests of an unborn child who is so far developed as to feel pain is supported by a vast majority of Americans and is supportable under the law.

STATE NULLIFICATION OF UNCONSTITUTIONAL FEDERAL ACTS. It’s time.
I recall in 1973 when Roe v Wade came out that, the Supreme Court expressly said that States could regulate the last trimester of pregnancy due to health risk to mother. I took solace in that. Now we have a chance to use it.
How do you spell Republican leadership and ACTION regarding maintaining the quality of life in America? P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C!
It’s a States Rights issue anyway isn’t it?
I pray the States get started on these bans. My personal opinion is that everybody that votes for abortion in any way shape or form will have to answer to a Higher authority, and for those that do not vote, I believe the opinion they give at the water cooler will count for or against them.
Im glad that the failed federal attempt to limit abortion at least helped to expose DC RINOs for the Constitution-ignoring fools that they are.
More specifically, the states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate abortion, regulating abortion a 10th Amendment-protected state power issue, imo, regardless what the activist justices who decided Roe v. Wade wanted everybody to think. And the only reason that corrupt DC has been regulating abortion is to win votes from low-information voters.
So dont think that the states are acting merely as a safety net with respect to Congresss failure to limit abortion because, again, the states uniquely have the 10th Amendment-protected power to regulate abortion imo.
Patriots need to wake state lawmakers up to the 10th Amendment.

Whopper of an oxymoron!!
From what I remember, in Japan, you couldn’t get it past the 1st trimester. Several abortion providers were busted for second trimester abortions and sentences to hard jail time.
Spineless they may be, but there is a silver lining-this should be an issue for each state, in my opinion-the fed is too schizophrenic to be trusted with the lives of the most innocent among us-depending on who is in charge/power, everything changes.
One size does not fit all states in this and other matters-what might be accepted in California is likely not acceptable to the people of Texas, Louisiana or other states where more of us respect the lives of the unborn-the fed has no business butting in to say we have to permit infanticide...
This is a case where I completely missed the whole thing, and now the vote is merely referenced without any explanation so I still don’t have a clue.
Glad to see them taking action on a subject that is such a threat to our Republic. Was kind of hoping for articles of impeachment by now.
Let’s start with NORTH CAROLINA!
Now clinics are getting beginning to get drummed. It's about dang time.
Many things should be decided at the state level. Abortion, gay marriage, etc.
Isn’t that what the founders wanted?
The 17th Amendment basically says, "Screw the Founders".
Until it's repealed that's the operative phrase in every argument about what the founders wanted and anything to do with State power vs. Federal power.
Rene Ellmers, soon-to-be former House member...
Sigh, you’re right.
But we can dream, can’t we.
Then again, US "Conservatives" getting together and focusing on one thing to get it done has proved to be a dream in the past and probably is now, too. Debating the finer points of perfection is just too much fun and requires so much less effort.
also, very true.
