Mitch McConnell Did Something Last Night to Senate Dems That Has Them Furious

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) late Thursday left Democrats angry and sputtering on the Senate floor, as he used his new power as majority leader to brush off several Democratic amendments in an effort to speed up work on a bill to approve the Keystone pipeline.

McConnell has so far made a point of allowing amendment votes, something Democrats barely allowed for the last few years. Earlier Thursday, McConnell boasted that the Senate had already held more amendment votes on the Keystone bill than Democrats allowed during all of 2014.

“We’ve actually reached a milestone here that I think’s noteworthy for the Senate,” McConnell said after the 15th amendment vote. “This is the way the Senate ought to work.”

But McConnell has also said the Senate can’t work on the Keystone bill forever, a warning that he wants to finish it up at some point in the near future.

Late Thursday night, McConnell said the new open process in the Senate led members of both parties to propose a new wave of amendments that he wanted to deal with immediately. He asked senators for an agreement to vote on a series of 12 amendments right then and there.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) objected, and said Democrats would be ready to keep working on these amendments on Friday. But McConnell dismissed that and said the Senate should be ready to work on them now. With no agreement, he said his only choice was to start a series of votes to table, or kill, all Democratic amendments.

“Given the fact that they’re reluctant to vote on their own amendments… the only way to go forward is to table their amendments,” he said.

“Wow! Damn there is hope for Mitch McConnell. Go man, hit these communists Democrats hard.”

I think so too. And some encouraging e-mails and appreciative input would work wonders to persuade him to do much more of this kind of thing. Why can’t we make sure that our representatives in Washington hear what we like and don’t like instead of leaving it to the media to misrepresent?

No he's not. Broken clock, right twice a day.

McConnell boasted that the Senate had already held more amendment votes on the Keystone bill than Democrats allowed during all of 2014.

This is Mr. Tough guy??

Not likely. He may be good on procedure. On substance, he's as horrible as we all thought. Wait til he uses procedure to shut down conservatives on spending, amnesty and Obamacare.

Yeah, let’s wait until there is an issue that the Chamber of Commerce is against to see how Mitchie is.

“If that is true, why is Obamba and most Dims dead set against it? That makes no sense!”

Yes it does. Tom Steyer has 200 million invested in environmental wackiness. The unions are being decimated and are having a tough time playing. Especially after card check failed and RTW is picking up steam.

This would be the time for Republicans to partner with the unions. That alone would kill illegal immigration.

Turtle and Weeper are assholes ... but we’re stuck with them for the present. We should excoriate them when they do wrong; we should not forget to praise them when they do right. Turtle is doing right, here

Oh, great, another Republican that isn't satisfied with any of our candidates that don't decend from Heaven on a cloud and sport a halo....good grief, don't compare them to what you would consider perfect, compare them to the previous 2 idiots and then be VERY thankful. Repubs stayed home in droves during the last presidential election and instead of a VERY desireable President Romney, they gave us president ZERO for another 4 years.....thanks.

So the Dems are complaining about not having time to read their own ammendments?

A whole lotta people on this site did not expect much good to come from McConnell’s leadership. Here’s hoping he proves them wrong.

Also nice to see Ben Sasse presiding over the Senate!

Is he President of the Senate pro tempore? That’s 4th in line of succession!

“Is he President of the Senate pro tempore? That’s 4th in line of succession!”

No. Hatch is the president pro tempore. Sasse was merely presiding, which is normal for freshmen.

"Mitch asked himself, “What would Harry have done?

Yeah Mitch is a sorely lacking leader but sounds like Mitch is good at playing follow the leader, I am not so ready to praise one right step of a man who has made so many wrong steps, it is not in him to naturally do what is right for the country; he is motivated by something but doing right is not in his political nature;  I have learned over many years of observation; never ever trust a Rino.

I have gradually become almost incurably skeptical; hope is a thinly worn thread when it comes to the current political scene; it seems it is always  carnival dog and pony showtime, the political carnival hawkers are shouting out that the best freak show is under their tent, come one, come all, you will be amazed; you've have never seen anything like it before.
