Yemens powerful Shiite Houthi rebels shelled the residence of the countrys embattled president Tuesday and simultaneously swept into the presidential palace in the capital, Sanaa, as a top military commander warned that a full-fledged coup was underway.
President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi was inside the residence as it came under heavy shelling for half an hour but he was unharmed and protected by guards, officials said. In New York, the U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting over the chaos in Sanaa.
The shelling was a dramatic development that put the U.S.-backed Hadi into a precarious position and represented the starkest challenge to his authority since the Houthis swept into Sanaa from their northern stronghold and seized the capital in September.

Doesn’t Saudi Arabia usually come to rescue when a Sunni regime is threatened in the Gulf?
And where did they get the shells ?...............................Benghazi? nah.....couldn’t be........................
How do guards protect your from "heavy shelling"?
I bet when he looked out his window and saw them coming, he thought, “Oh, Shiite!”
I think it is too late to rescue a "threatened" regime. Maybe they can save a defeated regime, but I doubt it.
Saudi Arabia itself is being threatened by ISIS in the north and AQ in the south. The squeeze is on and I bet the princes are pooping bricks about now.
Yeah, they call the Marines. But we're stretched a bit thin with air support on the other side, with ISIS.
How’s that Arab Spring working out again?
Another great Obama foreign Policy Victory!!
(If you dare to think otherwise, you are a RASSISS!!)
I bet the princes are pooping bricks about now.
If they are they are gold bricks! They better pick up their bricks and do something before it is too late.
Another Obama foreign policy success story...
What are the odds we’re not evacuating our Yemen embassy because it would distract from Obama’s SOTU tonight?
I thought of that too. I would be flying it to Zurich right now.
Only their fellow monarchs typically. Plus they have an imminent northern invasion to worry about
Yes, threatened.
By which I mean they should have done something a while ago.
Saudi Arabia sent Saudi troops and tanks to rescue the government in Bahrain in 2011 from a Shia uprising.
I think they have done covert military action before.
In the 60s Saudi and Egypt had a proxy war in Yemen. The Zaidis are bad news. A Palestinian guy I know used to try to tell me how great my Jewish family had it living in a Muslim country. When I told him the Zaidis were in charge in Yemen he shut up... They were as bad to the Sunnis as they were to the Jews
