Dr Tony Perry, a pioneer in cloning, has announced precise DNA editing at the moment of conception in mice.
He said huge advances in the past two years meant "designer babies" were no longer HG Wells territory.
Other leading scientists and bioethicists argue it is time for a serious public debate on the issue.
Designer babies - genetically modified for beauty, intelligence or to be free of disease - have long been a topic of science fiction.

What a brave new world that has such creatures in it.
The world of Gattaca is almost upon us, it would seem.
I'm sick of having "debates" over what should be common sense morality.
Lobs = libs, damn auto correct.
“they say we need to have a “national” debate”
Yes, the closest to a “national debate” is a presidential election.
How does that turn out?
Lets see, even with Republicans elected we still have 55 million abortions, gay marriage, funding of Islamic anti-American organizations, funding of offensive “art”, 30 percent on food stamps, foreign aid to nations that hate us, legalized pot, open boarders and federal control of public schools that extends to the lunch menu.
At least this science may be able to finally eliminate the lifelong torture and horror of any individual male or female having had the genetic misfortune to be born ugly and unattractive, in a world dominated by lockstep addiction to outward physical appearances. The number of lifetimes filled with anguish and loneliness saved will be more than worth any down side. So the naysayers need to stuff it.
I hope that is sarcasm.
You think eugenics is a good idea?
You know when it comes down to it, I agree with what you said.
We are marching towards Orwell...
How much longer before terrorism and assassination are the only tools left to the sane man?

It is also a given that these designer ding-alings will bubble to the top based on tests biased to make it happen. So now the so-called “intelligencia” will rule all others, the doomkofs.
God will not be mocked.
I talked to a friend about this. Although he was originally opposed to the idea of genetic engineering of children, he wasn’t so sure when I asked him if he would have spent $10,000 so his daughter had perfect vision (as opposed to his Mr. Magoo nearsightedness) and strong lungs (as opposed to his asthma and allergies). He wasn’t so opposed upon thinking of that. Then I added the ability to run the 100 meter dash in 8 seconds...
Yeah, parents usually do what ever they can to help their children in life. If they have a illness or genetic disability they would do what ever they could to cure or assist.
To cure Down Syndrome or heart value problems would justify tinkering with genes I think.
The problem is that right now you have to toss out some embryos, which is basically murder in my view.
If you knew your kid would suffer manic depression, and you could cure it with gene therapy, you probably would do that to prevent suicide or suffering.
But, if everyone did that, half of the greatest artists and poets wouldn’t exist.
