Stung by a series of box office misfires and failed sale attempts, DreamWorks Animation plans a substantial number of layoffs, two people familiar with the matter said.
In a move to cut operating costs, the Glendale studio intends to significantly reduce the size of its workforce, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the plans. While the precise number of people who will lose their jobs has yet to be finalized, the number is expected to exceed the 350 layoffs that occurred in 2003 after the studio shelved production of the movie "Me and My Shadow."
Layoffs are expected to include animators, story-board artists and other production personnel and support staff at the studio's Glendale and Redwood City facilities, which employ about 2,200 workers.

Thank Obama for your firing.
Three new Vice Presidents, HR personnel will be doubled, and the CEO will be given a bonus...
Why thank Obama?
They made lousy movies.
SKG.
Spielberg Katzenberg Geffen.
No job lock!
Not to fret. They can realize their dream of being an artist and not lose their healthcare, according to Nancy Pelosi.
Oh, wait. They already are artists.
People finally getting CGI burnout.
If they’re good, they’ll be snapped up by houses making films Americans are GOING to see at the box office, and I bet the potential breeder employees will be the first to go.
One of their recent box office bombs was Peabody & Sherman, which I liked. I rented it on video rather than going to the theater, however.
It is capitalism at work. If folks don't buy your stuff then get busy and improve products and costs.
It's not just animators among the 2200 employees. A friend's son is an IT manager there; his name is in the credits of their movies. DreamWorks has made some good movies, but also some stinkers. They're not consistent like Pixar, and don't focus on presenting a good story as does Pixar. So yes, make films with good stories that Americans want in order to be successful.
in a better economy, people would have extra money to go see their crappy movies.
Right, you can’t simply put out films that look cool and expect people to go see them. Once they pay to see one and find out the story is junk, they are not going to pay to sit through another of your stinkers.
“People finally getting CGI burnout.”
I reached that point a couple of years ago. No more CGI movies for me. Ever. I’m only interested in great story-telling, character development and interesting dialog, none of which appear in CGI movies.
“Right, you cant simply put out films that look cool and expect people to go see them.”
Almost all CGI movies are now nothing more than advertisements for the video game.
Obama personally picked out "Turbo" and "Penguins of Madagascar"?
Amen!
Wasn’t it just about ten days ago the regime announced that unemployment was down and the economy was picking up steam? Another propaganda lie.
