As I posted to Dalberg-Acton:

Lee was a man who betrayed his oath as a graduate of West Point to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States, Lee not only took up arms against his country but also arguably, by his participation, caused untold death and destruction and the elongation of the War of Secession.

Apparently the US Government doesn’t fully agree with the above statement since they named a major US fort in honor of Lee (from 1917 to present) and his image is on five US postage stamps (issued in 1937, 1949, 1954, 1970 & 1995, .
