Not to sidetrack any discussion, but in my classes (late 60s to mid 70’s), there were often 35-40+ kids in one classroom for one teacher. I don’t recall any teacher’s aide either. Granted, this was in Catholic schools, and we taught by nuns for most grades. So I agree with your assessment, that in general, teachers now are asking for more money to teach fewer children.

I knew a Sister that told me that soon after she entered the convent they stuck her in a class of first graders and there were 40 of them and she really had no clue. Would have been the late 60’s early 70’s. She did not want to teach and she stayed a sister, but got out of teaching as soon as she could.

Cautionary tale to all the well I used to be Catholic and all the Nuns (which if you were paying attention are sisters, nuns are cloistered), were mean. Well duh! They were young, hormonal and many of them did not want to teach but in those days, they had teaching, nursing or missionary. Those were their only choices. So no wonder they were crabby!
