Duke University has reversed itself, and announced Thursday afternoon it will not allow a Muslim call to prayer Friday from its iconic cathedral.
The decision had met with widespread controversy.
“Duke remains committed to fostering an inclusive, tolerant and welcoming campus for all of its students,” said Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations. “However, it was clear that what was conceived as an effort to unify was not having the intended effect.”
Members of the Muslim community will now gather on the quadrangle outside the chapel before moving to its regular location for prayers, Duke said.
The move to authorize the call to prayer from the chapel had roiled social media and led to a denunciation from evangelist Franklin Graham.

Just look at the size of that chapel. Years ago it was probably filled during services. And now?

Duke, believe they can make what they know to be controversial moves without expecting blow-back.
Makes one wonder what other dumb @ss decisions Duke hierarchy makes pertaining to campus and curriculum.
I do recall that a few years ago one of their high level administrators lived with his gay pardner and with a young foster child which was the victim of their pedophile sex acts, photos of which were sent by them over internet. The Duke hierarchy was defending his job at the school.It was in the area newspapers and on internet for a few days and disappeared. Que’ pasa??
But then again, they have one of the leading research hospitals in the world and play great football and basketball.
