No U.S. leader should ever feel obligated to show his face at that kind of silly crap. This is why the rally wasn't even attended by U.S. leaders who have criticized other U.S. leaders for failing to attend.

I saw plenty of references to free speech in the media reports on the Paris rally including a report from your own CBS news. Even Jon Stewart got in on the act with an attack on Obama for not showing up on a free spèech rally.
Why was Ted Cruz not there? When did Ted Cruz become the Secretary of State or a member of the State Department or the cabinet? It’s the executive that represents the US government and caries out foreign affairs, not the legislature who are there to make laws.
