AUSTIN (KXAN) Governor-Elect Greg Abbott criticized city bans this week and said reducing regulatory burdens would make Texas a better state.
The truth is Texas is being California-ized and you may not even be noticing it, said Abbott as he spoke Thursday. Its being done at the city level with bag bans, fracking bans, tree cutting bans. Were forming a patchwork quilt of bans and rules and regulations that is eroding the Texas model.
If you live in Austin, youve likely had an experience with the plastic bag ban.
I realized that something that I originally thought was a hassle is something that I now appreciate, said Robert Schmidt, in support of the bag ban in Austin.
Other shoppers havent come around to the changes.
I never know if my bags are in my truck or in my van, said another shopper.
Texas has already seen attempts from the legislature to limit city rules. A bill failed last session known as the Shopping Bag Freedom Act, which aimed invalidate city bag bans. This year another bill would require certain city ballot measures to go in front of the attorney general before it could go to a vote.
The governor will have to use his influence to accomplish changes. Clinical Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs Sherri Greenberg says she believes Abbott has support given the makeup of at the Capitol.
The governor comes in in his new position. Hes in his honeymoon period, said Greenberg. He won overwhelmingly. He also has Republican control, all the statewide offices and the House and the Senate.
Greenberg says the issue raised by Abbott is a continuation of a long-standing debate in Texas about local control and the amount of regulations in the state.
[Unchecked over-regulation by cities] is contrary to my vision for Texas, said Abbott. My vision is one where individual liberties are not bound by city limit signs. I will insist on protecting unlimited liberty to ensure that Texas will continue to grow and prosper.
From Baltimore was Pelosi. She’s home in DC.
And, let’s not forget, Mr. Abbott wakes up in DOWNTOWN Austin everyday.
So, as a citizen, setting aside he’s the Governor, he is certainly eligible to voice an opinion and act on it if he chooses to.
Report: Texas Music Office director Casey Monahan wont be retained
I agree.
Yeah, that one makes me lol.
So many FReepers cursing California for its liberalism. Throughout the late forties, increasing in the fifties, into the sixties, and still ongoing is the migration from icy Winters Liberal East Coast to Sunny weather in not only California, but Florida as well. Look what’s happening in Florida also. It’s not just retiree’s either.
Texas might look towards Louisiana, and think about Katrina for their woes also.
Life is corrosive indeed...all aspects. Incrementalism at every turn is rust on our republic.
My opinion.
We knew it would be coming. Radicals sent here to do 0bama’s dirty works doesn’t help either.
And they usually sit in a hot truck festering like in a petre dish.
I won’t argue that we get our share of leftist malcontents from those other regions, but we DO have a recent large influx of liberal California carpetbaggers stirring trouble up in Texas, especially in Austin and surrounding areas.
Has that skank Eva Longoria given up on her Texas project yet?
The Left is throwing good money after bad here, it’s unlikely the State is going to become less red for the foreseeable future.
Incrementalism is the preferred method for socialists. It’s the kudzu vine of political and cultural change.
I saw that Sen. Boxer is retiring in 2016.
Maybe you can ship Abortion Barbie over to California.
I suspect she’d have a good shot at winning.
Your original statement used the word "granted", which is very different.
The Californians have been doing it to Washington State for years! We’ve also had an influx of people from NY, VA, etc. move in. Not to mention a lot of non-Americans (Chinese, Russian, Indian, Mexican, Somalian, etc.).
I believe one could count NV, NM and a few other states in the CA in-migration as well. Same as New Yorkers are doing on the east coast and FL. Montana is the same way - many Hollywood “stars” bought hundreds of acres of land because it was so inexpensive. Wish they’d stay in Beverly Hills and Malibu.
Fair enough.
I don’t go to Austin much anymore. The streets are in terrible condition and the city is short of money. They also like to experiment putting obstacles in middle of some street to beautify? or something!
I go to Austin once a week to work at the Homeless Center to distribute clothing. I was told there are at least 4500 hard core homeless in downtown Austin. You’ll find them sleeping on alleys, under the bridges, and beggars on every street corners.
Austin used to be a really nice place years ago before the Libards took over the council.
I hope that now that Allen West is a Texan, he may be able to help anti-Kalifohrnianize it.
Lets hope the trend continues, and all the mentally ill twisted leftist all bail out of CA. I don’t care where they go.
BTW, all those Texans who were begging people to flee to texas for the past 15 years were warned repeatedly. Massive populations flowing in for whatever reasons are never good and is certainly not a recipe for success.
It comes with a big ugly price.
Bite yo tongue!
With kalifornia, “conservative” may be a very relative term.
